My experience of Windows from '95 on has been that shortly after installation of the OS Microsoft has to issue updates, service packs etc.  I think there were 3 service packs for XP (late lamented).

It appears we will get Win10 at the end of this month.  My inclination is to wait a month or so untill all the bugs are dealt with.

What do you think?

I hate it when they "improve" computer stuff, it always takes me months to find out where stuff I could put my finger on straight away has now moved to to...

But then I am an idiot.

I would wait a while if I were you Jock.

I think that's what I'll do.  The upgrade is free for a year.  Thanks.

My home PC is poised and as I have backup in the form of this netbook I shall take the plunge when back. I shall inform.

One of the attractions of 10, if I've understood the publicity, is that it'll bring back some XP features. Why then not just keep XP going?  Perhaps the XP code had become "tired" and too difficult to keep patching.

I've installed 10 in a creaky old Windows 7 laptop, not my main machine.  The install took a while and the first couple starts after install were slow.  Now it starts at least as quickly as 7 did.
The old machine seems to be running a bit faster now that it has settled down.  Within a month I can revert to the old OS but if it carries on as it is I'll probably keep 10 on the laptop.  After a couple of months I'll think about upgrading the main machine depending on reviews.

I will upgrade eventually but prefer to wait a while until some of the bugs & fixes are sorted.

The free upgrade is time limited.

I have had a notification that I can download it to my netbook but the internet connection where I am now in France is so slow (400kpbs!) that it timed out.

I shall have to wait until I am back in the modern world in 10 days time.

You have a year to decide.

Took the plunge and installed 10 overnight.  Working well.  Had to spend some time changing most of the default settings but other than that a simple process.

Installed this morning as it's raining & nowt else to do. Took about an hour + another hour to sort things out & get rid of a load of crap I'll never use.
Not sure that I like it more than 8.1 but hey ho, it's done now.

I upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday without any problems, just the tweaking of a few things as I expected. All seems well so far Smile

Me too. Now running Windows 10 on my 5 year old laptop. The only real thing I have a problem with it that is rather slow to load on startup, some tweaks needed.

The irritating issue I have is that when i click the network connections icon on the task bar quite often nothing happens at all. A pain when not at home trying to connect even to my portable hot-spot.

I cannot load Windows 10 onto my desktop PC, it informs me that my graphics card is not suitable.

Not sure if this is connected to your issue but when I upgraded to Windows 10 everytime my PC went into sleep mode (hibernation) it lost the network dongle when waking up. I had to restart the PC to pick it up again.

I resolved this by the following:-

  • "Windows key" + X > Device Manager > Expand the Network adapters section
  • Right-click on the wireless network card > Properties > Power Management tab
  • Uncheck option Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power + OK:

  • Wink
