will my Irish debit card work in the algarve, coming over in august for a week, I don't use credit cards and don't want to bring a lot of cash.

You will be able to use your card at most, if not all of the atm machines in the Algarve. Also in shops and restaurants, the very same as you use your card at home. The daily limit at atms is lower than at home. I'm not sure of current limits, I recall around E200 per transaction, but I seem to remember somebody on this forum saying that you could do two transactions per day, so perhaps now daily limit at atms E200x2. I am sure somebody in the know will advise on the current limits.

bebop is right that you can only withdraw â‚¬200 max at one time. I am told you can make two such transactions in one day. I would never dream of walking around with â‚¬400 in my pocket, so have never tried it.

Be aware that many shops won't accept cards for small transactions of under 5 Euros. And you will need cash for bars!
