Yesterday : Guia 2 Imortal 0

A good game on a very rainy day. Imortal could not break down the massed ranks of the Guia defence, while for their part Guia's winner was as good a goal as you would wish to see in any game.

More tomorrow.

GUIA 2 IMORTAL 0

At the end of local derby, the frustration within the Imortal squad was palpable. Several didn't stop to shake hands and defender Claudio was busy trying to kick holes into the side of the player's tunnel as he went off. Not such a good idea as it is concrete.

Imortal had hurled everything they could at their opponents, but couldn't break down a  stubborn defence. Guia's winner was, as I said, worthy of a higher stage.

It was a wet and cold afternoon, some of the rain being quite heavy at times. No pictures as I didn't want to get the camera wet. Most of the 100 or so crowd spent the game huddled under the narrow roof outside the bar.

Imortal were a bit short of bodies for this one, able to name only five subs. Guia had plenty of familiar faces among their ranks in the shape of former Imortal players.

Imortal started slowly and were caught out after just eight minutes. The defence was slow to react at a corner, leaving striker Marinho to nip in at the near post and prod home the opener.

There was a good reaction, but it was soon obvious that Guia's game plan was to defend in depth. The small pitch at Guia makes that fairly easy, space is at premium. Imortal's captain Pedro had two early chances to score from free kicks awarded just outside the area but both sailed over the bar. Guia were content to rely on counter-attacks and breakaways. One time Imortal midfielder Ricky sped down the right wing, outpaced defender Baldé (not easy!) and skimmed a low shot just wide of the far post.

At the other end a great pass by Mauro set up Lucian, his low hard shot was well saved.  Chico and then Baldé had shots blocked as the pressure intensified. It was fast and sometimes furious stuff as Imortal pumped ball after ball into the mixer, but Guia's defence held fast.

It was so dark and gloomy at half time that the ref ordered the floodlights to be switched on! It was raining hard and grass was slick, which made the ball hard to control and gave defenders the chance to make some some un-Portuguese sliding tackles. Chico had already been booked in the first half for one such, arriving several seconds after his opponent had passed the ball. Mauro and Fischer were to join him for similar offences.

Guia started the second half brightly, Rui Sacramento (another former Imortal star) hit the bar with a long shot after four minutes. For Imortal defender Baldé, now pushing forward,  had two more efforts blocked in quick succession within a flurry of corners and shooting chances.

Imortal continued to press, bringing on Marco Benje to supplement Mauro up front. Guia's defending was sometimes fortunate, but always effective. Yet another former Imortal man, Pipoca, skied a clearance that caused all sorts of problems when it dropped almost on the goal-line. Imortal missed the chance as the ball was scrambled clear, Pipoca had to go off with an injury sustained in the process.

Guia soaked up the pressure, then with thirteen minutes left on the normal time clock, a hopeful ball down the left rushed Pedro into a mis-kick on the halfway line. There was a huge space behind him, a very good cross was superbly converted by Marinho with a first time shot from 25 yards that gave Paulo in goal no chance at all. Cue great joy on and off the pitch, among the Guia fraternity at least.

Imortal had a good chance to pull one back a few minutes later, but Pedro's excellent shot was equally well saved. The four added minutes were again end to end, with Paulo bringing off two more great stops.

Guia have won three games on the trot, all at home, but have some tough matches ahead. Imortal need to bounce back next week and should do so against lowly Monchique (who have lost 14 of their last 15 games) before the big match at home to Almancil on Easter Saturday.

Last night : Imortal XI 4 Spartans U-19 1

Spartans are a well established club based in Edinburgh, whose first team play in the recently formed semi-pro Scottish Lowland League.

Imortal fielded a mixture of first team and U19 players, including five of those who played in the game againnt Guia last Saturday. Spartans began nervously and were two down within 15 minutes after some shaky defending. They rallied and made Imortal work harder but still found themselves 4-0 down at half time after the hosts had created two really good scores.

Imortal changed their goal keeper at half time and it was their turn to make mistakes, giving Spartans an early goal. There was a three second bout of fisticuffs, which saw one player from each side get a red card from a rather officious referee.

Spartans nearly pulled one back with a superb 25 yard freekick that crashed off the crossbar and were twice denied by the goalkeeper's legs.

The game finished 4-1, Imortal had been able to give  good run out to players who have not featured much in the first team of late and everyone left the field fairly happy.

Imortal Albufeira 5 Monchiquense 1

A routine win for Imortal against very poor opposition. The Thursday run-out for the old boys didn't to do them any harm. Marco Benje played the whole 90 minutes up front in place of Mauro, Canito and Nelson Moutinho also put in a full shift. Young midfielder Chico, who also played on Thursday, was man of the match.

One blow was the loss of Baldé early on with a knee injury. With a big game coming up next weekend, Imortal are struggling for fit and available players.

The game started well for Imortal, with Benje heading a corner over from six yards and Lucian twice being denied by good saves from an erratic goalkeeper.

The breakthrough came mid-way through the half. Chico sent over a perfect cross that Benje converted at the far post with an unopposed header into the top corner.

Despite further pressure and chances for Lucian and Paco, Imortal couldn't increase the score. They almost conceded one when defender Pedro and Chico got in each other's way thirty yards from goal, allowing a Monchique man a run at goal. Paulo woke from his slumbers to pull off a good blocking save. That was Monchique's only attempt at goal for the entire first half.

The second half also started well for the hosts. Benje forced a good save in the first minute then after five minutes Chico again played the perfect cross-field pass this time for Lucian, whose run at goal was capped by a low hard shot that gave the 'keeper no chance.

Chico then had a great chance himself but hesitated just a moment too long in front of goal, givign the goalkeeper time to position himself for the save.

There followed twenty minutes or so of nothing happening. Monchique defended in depth as you might imagine for a team that ships an average of nearly three goals per game. Imortal couldn't find a way through.

Then, with fifteen minutes remaining there started a flurry of goals. It began with a superb strike from Chico from all of thirty yards. A free kick was gently rolled into his path and he smashed it straight into the bottom left hand corner of the net before the defenders and 'keeper had a chance to move. The visiting British fans were suitably impressed! 3-0

The joy was short lived however. Two minutes later, a punt out of midfield soared over the heads of the Imortal defensive trio, a hopeful forward found himself one on one with Paulo in the Imortal goal and he coolly lobbed it over him for what was only Monchique's 16th goal scored in twenty-six league games. 3-1

Imortal were suitably slighted by this outrage. Bauro set up a Benje with a fine pass but again the 'keeper managed to get in the way.  Moutinho then shot from a ridiculous distance, the 'keeper fumbled it and Paco was on hand to stab in the rebound for 4-1

For a few minutes, Imortal seemed content. Monchique had almost given up. A couple of minutes into stoppage time, Lucian made it five with his second of the afternoon after a run from deep inside his own half past ineffective tackles which ended with a great shot.

Imortal's best result of the season thus far and a good boost for morale ahead of the re-arranged game next Saturday at home to Almancilense. The visitors will be really wanting to win as that would put them three points ahead of rivals Moncarpachense and in pole position before the two meet on 25th April.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 12, Monchique 15
Offside : Imortal 6, Monchique 2
Shots on target : Imortal 14, Monchique 2
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Monchique 0
Shots off target : Imortal 7, Monchique 1
Corners : Imortal 9, Monchique 4
Yellow cards : Imortal 2 (Fischer for a foul and Chico for a silly foul in stoppage time), Monchique 2, one for a foul and the other for dissent.

Super Ally - no we are out of the cup.

Imortal will be at home to Farense B next Saturday at the Albufeira Municipal stadium ko 4pm.

Match report - Mexilhoeira Grande 2 Imortal Albufeira 5

The numbers below will make this look like a massacre and make you wonder how Mexilhoeira scored twice. In fact, Imortal gifted their opponents their two goals and it could have been 3-3 just after half time, but for a brilliant save by Paulo and this against a team who had not scored more than twice in any league game all season.

Imortal were missing Baldé, Mauro and Benje so looked a bit lightweight up front. The game was played on the synthetic 3G pitch at Mexilhoeira, part of a sporting setup that puts to shame any facility I have seen in the UK even in a town ten times that size. It was sunny but rather windy at times, as it is in a fairly high and exposed position.

Imortal made a good start, creating three chances in the first five minutes but none were taken, something that was a feature of the game overall.

Then after eleven minutes they found themselves one down. A quick break down the left hand side and with keeper Paulo off his line a wind assisted lob sailed over him and into the back of the net from all of 30 yards.

Imortal responded strongly, creating more chances. Pato shot just wide after a good setup from Lucian, Lucian himself was then denied by a good save.

The breakthrough came on 27 minutes, Fischer scoring with an easy header after a corner, courtesy of a superb dummy by Nelson Moutinho.

The second came two minutes later, Lucian this time setting up Baúro, whose low shot from the edge of the area was too strong for the goalkeeper's fingertip attempt. 2-1 to Imortal.

Fast and furious was the action and both sides scored once more in the closing minutes of the half.

Mexilhoeira equalised on 40 minutes, after a shambolic couple of attempts to clear the ball out of the Imortal defence ended with Paulo having an impossible back-pass to deal with. His valiant attempt ended at the feet of a striker who whacked it back past him from the edge of the area. 2-2.

Imortal restored their lead with a minute of the first half remaining. A good curling free kick by captain Pedro was clawed from under the bar by the home 'keeper, but Lucian was on hand to tap in the rebound from a narrow angle. 3-2 to Imortal at half time.

The second half began badly for the home side when one of their players collided heavily with the concrete wall down one side of the pitch. With only three subs, they could ill afford to lose anyone and it required several minutes of attention before the player was able to rejoin the fray.

Imortal's moment came ten minutes into the half when a counter attack from Mexilhoeira ended with a good shot which Paulo parried low for a corner. After that it was all all one way, with the wind picking up and generally helping Imortal's cause. Umpteen chances were created, but it took until the last few minutes of the half before the scoreline properly reflected the state of the game.

Pato dropped a volley on top of the crossbar, Pedro had two free kicks go wide, Lucian scuffed a couple, Moutinho was on target but his weak shot was easily stopped.

Midway through the half saw the return of Nascimento, who had been absent for many weeks. He replaced Pato and immediately got into action in a terrific goalmouth scramble that saw three shots by Imortal blocked in the space of a few seconds. He then had a clear shot on goal that was pushed around the post for a corner.

Still Imortal couldn't get it right, until Chico scored with five minutes of normal time left and even that was rather fortunate. He surged towards goal, beat two tackles then slipped just as he was about to shoot. By accident, I think, he toe-ended the ball, which rocketed from about 25 yards past the startled goalkeeper's dive. 4-2

Three minutes of stoppage time were announced and the home side were out on their feet. One last effort from Imortal  right at the finish ended with a not too convincing shot from Moutinho, which bounced about six times before crossing the line. 5-2

All in all a win's a win, but against a better team Imortal would at times have been in big trouble defensively.

Lost four - nil yesterday. Awful performance, definitely an end of season feel to it.

Hardly anyone there, not surprising given that Benfica, Barcelona, Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal were on local TV at more or less the same time!

More tomorrow.

IMORTAL 0 FARENSE B 4

Farense's B team gave Imortal the run-around in the reverse fixture in December and so it was again on Saturday. Their slick passing and good play generally had the Imortal defenders all over the place. A blustery wind made control difficult and at times the game was a mixture of tidy short passing and wild hacks out of defence. Farense scored twice in each half, being gifted all of them.

The numbers might tell a different story, but it was pretty awful end off season stuff.

Imortal had the first chance on goal on 12 minutes, Nascimento shooting wide from the edge of the area after being presented with the ball by a poor clearance.

Paulo made a super tip-over save at full stretch when tested by a long range wind assisted effort.

In the last quarter hour Imortal were under sustained pressure. Farense were awarded a free kick just inside the Imortal half, they took it quickly and while Imortal's defenders were still trying to get organised the ball was sent down the right wing, crossed and it was an easy tap in. (sorry no names as there were no announcements and Farense has no information at all on their website about the B team!)

Three minutes later another horrible bit of defending with everyone getting in each other's way gifted Farense their second from close range.

Halt time and Imortal two-nil down. Two subs were made at half time, quite unusual but I guess some strong words were to be had during the interval. Mauro and Fabio replaced the ineffective midfield pair of Lucian and Pato, which resulted in a change in shape. Mauro took up his usual role as target man up front, with Nascimento and Baúro in support.

The half started badly for Imortal with three free kicks conceded in the first three minutes (they had conceded only three in the whole of the first half!) and Chico getting booked for an over-zealous challenge. He was one of the few to show any kind of spirit. Nascimento followed him into the book shortly afterwards, this time for a dangerously high foot.

Things were fairly scrappy in the period that followed. The wind was making it more difficult for both teams and chances were limited to wide hits or tame efforts easily saved.

Farense had the best chance, a free kick was sent hard and low across the goal but the assorted strikers managed first to miss it and the last one on the far post scuffing it wide from four yards, to the disgust of his team-mates.

Baldé came on with twenty minutes left and his speed started to unsettle the visitors defence.  Some nice play by him to Mauro, followed by a great layoff gave Baúro the chance to shoot from 25 yards, which he did almost perfectly but his effort crashed off the crossbar to safety.

Faro reacted and scored twice in two minutes. The first of these came when the Imortal off-side trap failed dismally, leaving two forwards againt Paulo. The idiot who scored was booked for taking his shirt off in celebration. Anyone would think he had won the World Cup!

The second came from a mistake by Chico, easily robbed of possession on the half way line when he had no-one behind him. That was poor organisation and once more Paulo could not halt the onrushing hordes. Four-nil.

There was a bit of a late rally from Imortal, but four down with ten minutes left it was a done game. Nelson Moutinho had two shots blocked in the penalty area, a fierce effort from Baldé hit Nascimento and flew over the bar, Mauro was just wide after the 'keeper had already gone down to save a low shot. Imortal managed the first and only offside flag against them in the 86th minute!

Nasicmento forced the Farense 'keeper into a really good save during stoppage time. The last act of the game was a great cross by Pedro to Mauro, who headed tamely into the goalkeeper's arms from six yards.

Overall, that was probably the worst performance I have seen this season. Most of the sparse crowd thought so as well as by the end most had gone to the bar to watch the Benfica game.

Next week's game against the 11 Esperanças is being played on Saturday evening so I will be unable to go. A good thing probably!

Imortal lost 5-3 away at the 11 Esperanças last night in Faro.I was unable to go.

They remain in 10th place.

Next Saturday Imortal will be at home to Lagoa, ko 1600hrs / 4pm followed by the U19's vs Lagos, ko 1900hrs.

The regional U19's championship playoff round is nearly half way through. A win for Imortal would put them level on points with Quarteirense at the top. This looks like being a close competition.
