As I said, a bad day all round!

As the players warmed up, it was obvious that the pitch was not in a good state. The rain didn't seem to have had much effect, but the grass was long and there were a lot of lumps and bumps.

That showed in the first half, which was dire. The two teams managed one shot each on target, there were few shots overall as everyone had trouble controlling the ball. A very officious referee didn't help, constantly interrupting the play to blow up for every little tug and push, much to the frustration of the players and the crowd of about 80. At the end of the half there been four yellow cards, no goals and a total of seven attempts at goal.

The second half was better, but Imortal's new look side failed to make the most of the opportunities presented to them by a combination of poor defending and lucky bounces. Rui opened the half with a good run, beating several players then being flattened on the edge of the area but no free kick was forthcoming.

Quarteira's best chance saw a shot hit the angle of post and bar and the rebound was well blocked.

It seemed to be drifting towards a 0-0 draw but with ten minutes remaining the Imortal defence switched off, leaving a player unmarked on the far post from one of the many free kicks and were duly punished. To be fair, they did rally and push forward but Nascimento fluffed two chances, Vitor was narrowly offside when the trap was nearly broken.

The referee found time to book another seven players in a game in which there was hardly a tackle and certainly nothing malicious. In all, a pretty unedifying spectacle for my €2,50.

It finished 1-0 and Imortal have some work to do. Next week they will be at home to Culatrense, who are always a difficult team to beat.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 26, Quarteira 19
Offside : Imortal 7, Quarteira 5
(So that's 57 free kicks of one sort or another in one match. Possibly a record, certainly the highest number I can remember through the ages.)
Shots on target : Imortal 3, Quarteira 1
Shots blocked : Imortal 3, Quarteira 4
Shots off target : Imortal 1, Quarteira 3
Corners : Imortal 5, Quarteira 4
Yellow Cards : Imortal 4 ( 2 fouls, 1 for handball and 1 for dissent), Quarteira 7 (4 for fouls, 1 for not retreating at a free kick, 1 for dissent and 1 for no reason that was obvious to us watching, certainly not the player himself.)

Awful stuff yesterday. Lost 3-0 at home to Culatrense without once testing their goalkeeper. For Imortal's part, they were caught out by two quick counter-attacks and the third goal near the end was a fumble by the goalie, but to be fair he made three really good saves otherwise it could have been much worse. More later.

Imortal Albufeira 0 - 3 Culatrense

Imortal have big problems. Totally ineffective in attack and easily caught out by swifter opponents counter-attacks, they managed only two shots on target both of which were easily gathered by the visiting 'keeper.

Highlight of the game was a last minute bit of retaliation by a Culatrense player, lashing out after he had been fouled and deservedly was sent off. The referee showed how a match can be officiated with fewer than half the free kicks awarded compared to last week's farce, despite some fairly robust challenges.

The first half was pretty poor, neither side making any kind of impression until the half hour mark. Culatrense staged a qhick counter attack, a feature of their play, but the shot was put wastefully wide. A few minutes later a similar attack ended with the Imortal defence not reacting quickly enough and a goal came from a snapshot from just outside the area.

Imortal were relying far too much on long passes, which were easily dealt with. Cultatrense came more and more into the game and went further ahead on 63 minutes again from a rapid counter attack. Imortal's sole shot on target in the second half was a weak effort from Nelson that I could have saved. Nascimento was totally missing from the action and was eventually replaced by sub Chico, who looked about 12. He was very industrious in midfield but nothing was happening in front of him.

Frustration grew and then the usual happened ten minutes before the end, Imortal were trying to get back into the game when off sped Culatrense down the right in a move finished off with a low hard shot that perhaps might have been dealt with a bit better. There was time for one more attack by the visitors which ended with the red card incident.

Much thinking will have to be done by Imortal's coaching staff before next Saturday's trip to Lagos.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 11, Culatrense 15
Offside : Imortal 4, Culatrense 2
Shots on target : Imortal 2, Culatrense 5
Shots blocked : Imortal 0, Culatrense 1
Shots off target : Imortal 4, Culatrense 5
Corners : Imortal 7, Culatrense 2
Yellow Cards :Imortal 3, one for a foul, one for a shirt pull and one for no reason I could discern; Culatrense 4, two for dissent, one for a bad tackle and one for stupidly kicking the ball away to prevent a quick throw.

Your football game report is excellent as usual.
Thank you for posting this. I'm sure Imortal would love if someone would do the same in Portuguese for their blog, website or Facebook page regularly...

Their website no longer works - http://www.imortaldc.com/

I've also noticed that the local newspapers no longer carry match reports.

The decline in football around here is becoming alarming.

Lagos 1 Imortal Albufeira 2

A windy day in Lagos, as it often is down there, plus a hard and uneven pitch gave both sides problems in controlling the ball. But it was a good game overall, Imortal geting a deserved winner with 10 seconds left of the four minutes added time. It was Imortal's first win of the season after a draw and two defeats.

Imortal made a fairly bright start, creating chances, but shooting was mostly a long way off target. Busy little midfielder Chico started and manged to get himself booked early on for a hefty lunge on an opponent about twice his size. Nascimento, ineffective last week, was dropped to the bench. Lagos gradually came back into the came and took the lead on 36 minutes. A direct free kick from outside the penalty area was blasted home low and hard, giving 'keeper Leandro no chance. They had another great opportunity just before half time but wasted it with a terrible shot, high and wide.

Imortal came out for the second half the more determined and Lagos were soon resorting to some fairly desperate means. The referee had awarded only eight fouls in the first half, some sort of record probably for this league, but he was soon frequently blowing his whistle and waving yellow cards. Lagos were causing the Imortal defence some concerns, but their shooting was now wayward, kicking more or less into the wind. Imortal's shooting also continued to be off target, with nothing troubling the home custodian.

Half an hour remained when Imortal were gifted a penalty. A stupid tackle on a player going nowhere. Nelson Moutinho stepped up and calmly beat the Lagos goalie for the equaliser.

Imortal sensed that things were going wrong for Lagos and continued to press. A few minutes were left when a red card was shown to Lagos player Kenny, for a wild reaction after he thought he had been fouled. With Lagos now down to 10 men, Imortal kept pushing forward.

Moutinho limped off injured, then four minutes of additional time were signalled.

A final effort, Lagos failed to clear properly and the ball bounced invitingly to Pedro on the edge of the area. He did brilliantly to smack the ball as a rocket towards goal and also keep it down. The goalie hardly moved, it hit the back of the net, cue delirious celebrations. There was only just time to kickoff again before the final whistle.

Match Stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 10, Lagos 16 plus the penalty
Offside : Imortal 2, Lagos 6
Shots on target : Imortal 3, Lagos 3
Shots blocked : Imortal 2, Lagos 2
Shots off target :Imortal 7, Lagos 7
Corners : Imortal 5, Lagos 7

Yellow cards : Imortal 2 Both for fouls, Lagos 3 all for fouls
Red Cards : Lagos 1 for violent conduct

Next Saturday Imortal will be at home to Faro e Benfica, who are one place above them. I don't know at the moment whether they will be using the 3G pitch or if the repairs to the main stadium pitch have been completed. All will be revealed as soon as confirmed on the AFA website.

A good win yesterday, 2-0 over Faro e Benfica despite playing the last 20 minutes with only ten men following a harsh sending-off. Report later.

Next week Imortal travel to league leaders Almancilense, who are 100% after five matches.

Imortal 2 Faro e Benfica 0

A good performance by Imortal, despite having defender Claudio sent off after 60 minutes.

A couple of new players, one at least who I saw playing for Ferreiras a little while ago, has boosted the squad.

The game was the first to be played on the main pitch this season. The problems with the grass have not been totally resolved and it was looking a bit moth-eaten in places.

The game was pretty untidy for the first twenty minutes or so, then Imortal began to exert some pressure. A free kick from Nelson Moutinho was well saved then a minute later an excellent move down the right wing was finished off in fairly spectacular style by Ismail, who turned and shot from the edge of the penalty area in one movement, the ball rocketing past the rather stunned looking 'keeper.

That was about it for the first half action.

The visitors started the second half well and had Imortal's defence all over the place for a good chance but luckily for us it was ruled out for offside. Claudio then saw red and for a few minutes after that Faro e Benfica pressed harder, but tested Leandro in goal only twice and he made the saves competently. One did rebound kindly for a striker but defenders were on hand to block.

Their threat petered out, Imortal kept calm and were rewarded with  just  a few minutes of normal time remaining. A swift counter attack down the right, a low hard cross which evaded the defenders leaving Peixinho the kind of far post tap in often missed, but he didn't.

The referee added five minutes, which eventually became nearly seven and a half! Imortal weren't really troubled and the game ended with their second win of the season.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 17, Faro e Benfica 20 (back to normal there then)
Offside : Imortal 6, Faro e Benfica 4
Shots on target : Imortal 5, Faro e Benfica 4
Shots blocked : Imortal 2, Faro e Benfica 6
Shots off target : Imortal 5, Faro e Benfica 5
Corners :Imortal 3, Faro e Benfica 6
Yellow cards : Imortal 1, Faro e Benfica 4
Red Card :Imortal 1

Next Saturday Imortal face a stiff test when they travel to Almancil to play leaders Almancilense.

Almancilense 4 Imortal 0

It was always going to be hard work against the leaders. The main difference was that Almancil were deadly efficient in front of goal, whereas Imortal didn't test their goalkeeper at all.

More later.

The next three games are against teams below us, so some results are possible.

ALMANCILENSE 4 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 0

Almancilense are top of the League with a 100% record after six matches and having scored an average of almost four goals per match.

Iit was always going to be hard work for Imortal and conceding an early goal didn't help. Just eight minutes had passed when 'keeper Leandro fumbled a corner, everyone piled in and it was the outstretched leg of Almacil's Matteo who stabbed the ball home.

Most of the rest of the first half was a midfield battle. Neoither side created much in the way of chances and passing was wayward. Imortal's best opportunity came on 25 minutes, a good passing move found Ismail 12 yards from goal, but he couldn't control the ball and the defenders quickly moved in to clear.

A great block by Baldé on the half hour kept Almancil at bay, Imortal had another half chance which Luciano blazed wide. Then right on half time a quick counter attack had Baldé stranded in no-man's land just inside his own half. A ball over the top was expertly collected (sorry we weren't told by whom!) and lobbed over the head of Leandro, who could do nothing.

The second half began badly for the visitors. Within two minutes they were further behind, failing to deal with a decent corner to the near post leaving Rui Graça a fairly simple header from close range. Five more minutes went by and it was four-nil as Almancil's rapid attacks simply swept Imortal aside.

Things settled down a bit after that. Imortal's Nelson hit the post with a free kick from 25 yards, shortly after that Leandro decided he had had enough and was replaced in goal by the small figure of Rose. He didn't have anything to do apart from be scared by a wild clearance by Pedro that went higher than it did forward and a wasted chance from Almancil when what should have been a simple header into goal for number five somehow ended up miles wide.

Imortal were poor up front when it mattered, Almancil punished defensive errors. Imortal's next three games are against teams below them in the table and ought to be winnable but an improvement in the striking department is needed.

Match statistics

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 16, Almancil 20
Offside : Imortal 0, Almancil 2
Shots on target : Imortal 2, Almancil 6
Shots blocked : Imortal 3, Almancil 1
Shots off target : Imortal 7, Almancil 6
Corners : Imortal 6, Almancil 4

Yelow cards : Imortal 1 (Nascimento for a silly foul and about the only time I noticed him), Almancil 3, one for dissent and two for fouls.

Sanity has prevailed and the Guia v Imortal match next Saturday has been reversed and will now be played on the Albufeira 3G pitch next Saturday at 3pm.

IMORTAL 1 SILVES 0

A winner two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game gave Imortal a victory they just about deserved over a very poor Silves outfit.

A quick clearance by goalkeeper Leandro found attacking defender Canito in a bit of space down the right just inside the half. He spotted the Silves 'keeper off his line and lobbed the ball high over him. Two defenders rushed back but to no avail as the ball crossed the line before they could get there. Cue wild celebrations for which Canito was duly yellow carded.

The team was slightly reshuffled from last week. Claudio was restored to the back four after a week suspension, Baldé was pushed forward into left midfield, Chico dropped to the bench.

Silves started the match fairly well but poor finishing let them down. The game then became very scrappy, Imortal managed not one shot in the first half hour as the Silves defence dealt with everything competently.  The final ten minutes of the half saw the game come to life. Imortal had a great breakaway attack, three on two, but it was ruined by a dreadful final ball, then at the other end Leandro reacted very well to dive low and push a header around the post when off balance.

Nelson Moutinho had a super low and hard free kick from all of thirty yards well saved as the half came to a close. No goals and it didn't look there were going to be any.

Silves went on the defensive for the second half, managing only one shot of any description and resorting to the big hoof upfield whenever threatened. Imortal worked hard to get around the defensive walls but numbers prevailed for the most part.

Nascimento and Paco were involved in what was nearly a rugby scrum for a loose ball around the Silves penalty spot, but the massed ranks of defenders booted the ball away.

Silves resorted to the petty fouling method of breaking up play and it seemed that free kicks were being given on appeal! The Silves goalkeeper added to the frustration by pretending to mortally wounded, getting his free kick and taking forever to get to his feet. Meanwhile the full might of the law was being brought to bear on a group of kids kicking a ball around on the running track. To be fair they shouldn't have been there, but to have a man with a gun shoo them away seemed a bit over the top.

Back to match and nothing was in danger of happening. Imortal created another chance but first Nascimento and then Ismail fluffed shots after the goalkeeper had mishandled a cross.

Silves broke away with ten minutes left but their forward, in the clear, was given offside much to to the ire of the visiting bench. Lucky escape for the home team. Silves managed their one and only shot as the regulation time came to an end.

The referee announced five extra minutes. Two minutes later Canito scored the all important goal and there was still time for Paco to bring out a good save with a shot from distance.

Match stats and yes it was as poor as the numbers suggest.

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 19, Silves 22 (26 of the free kicks were in the second half ie one almost every 2 minutes)
Offside :Imortal 5, Silves 4
Shots on target : Imortal 4, Silves 1
Shots blocked :Imortal 3 , Silves 0
Shots off target : Imortal 3, Silves 6 (all but one of Silves' in the first 15 minutes)
Corners :Imortal 5, Silves 4
Yellow Cards : Imortal 2 (1 for dissent, 1 for Canito's celebration), Silves 3 (1 for stupid handball, I for dissent and 1 for a bad foul)

Imortal's next home game will be against Guia next Saturday at 3pm. The game has been switched from Guia and will be played on the top 3G pitch at the complex. The little bar up there is now fully functional!

Imortal 2 Guia 2

A disappointing outcome for Imortal in the local derby. A combination of good defending by Guia and poor finishing by their hosts gave Guia a well-earned point on a dark and rainy afternoon.

More later.

Imortal 2 Guia 2

Imortal let themselves down on a rainy afternoon. Two lapses in defence cost two goals and despite throwing everything at the visitors after they had a player sent off some woeful finishing meant that the rivals from down the road left the field the happier by far.

Baldé was absent, Chico took his place in midfield. Claudio was restored to defensive duties after suspension.

Imortal started well enough and went ahead on thirteen minutes. Lucien had a great shot well saved, then the well taken corner was not dealt with by the defenders leaving the same player with an easy tap-in at the far post.

The lead lasted only ten minutes, Guia broke down the left, Imortal's midfield didn't challenge effectively and they were undone by a great shot from the corner of the penalty area, low and hard which gave Leandro no chance. Ten minutes after that Guia went ahead with an almost carbon copy goal.

Imortal then suffered a big blow, literally for Nelson Mountinho, who took a heavy blow to the face and had to go off. There followed the usual fracas and a booking for the Guia player involved. An ambulance was summoned for the injured player and off he went for some extensive repairs. He was replaced by Mica.

The closing minutes of the first half saw Imortal squander a couple of good opportunities through poor control and Paco missed with a header that he should have buried.

Imortal began the second period as they had ended the first and were rewarded a few minutes in when Pedro hammered a free kick with deadly accuracy past the wall and Guia goalkeeper to bring things level. Imortal had so much of the ball they did not conceded one free kick for the first fifteen minutes, Guia meanwhile were resorting to spoiling tactics.

A scuffle earned one of their lot a second yellow and off he went. Guia defended in depth, Imortal could not find a way around the masses. The final few minutes brought two glorious chances to win the game, but sub António completely missed one superb cross from Nascimento, Nascimento then had a great shot blocked then António put an easy chance wide from five yards to the  amazement of the spectators.

The game finished 2-2 and there was some post match discussion between rival players as they left the field.

Next week Imortal travel to Monchique, who seem to be improving after a couple of heavy defeats.

In midweek Imortal won their Algarve Cup First Round match over in Faro 2-1 against Faro e Benfica. The second round draw is yet to be made.

Match stats v Guia
