GUIA 0 - 1 IMORTAL

A closely contested local derby, in which the numbers favoured Imortal especially in the second half, but it took a goal deep into added time at the end for Imortal to secure the win.

It was a sunny day, but quite windy at times. Guia in green, Imortal in red.

That winning goal came from possibly an own goal, difficult to see from where I was. Good work by Juelson down the left wing got him free of his marker, he hammered the ball low and hard from the edge of the area more or less along the goal-line. Defenders and goalkeeper went for it, seemed to get in each other's way and the ball suddenly popped into the net.

Cue celebrations, there was barely time to kickoff. A the final whistle Juelson (number 8)  took exception to something said from the crowd. He was about to leap the barrier and do some damage when restrained by two GNR, several team-mates and a friend or relative who stepped onto the pitch.

The first half was slow to warm up. The gusty wind didn't help, both teams were having trouble controlling the ball on a hard surface. There wasn't a chance at either end until the 20th minute, when a rebound found Lucien on the edge of the Guia area. He was swiftly outnumbered before he could make anything of it.

A bit of 'spot the ball' for you from this first half incident. Guia in green defending. Was it at A, B, C or D? Kudos to the first correct answer.

A few more chances came Imortal's way late in the half. Ricardo Vicente managed only a tame header when unmarked on the six yard line, the same player missed with a first time volley shortly before half-time after a great downward header by Paollo. Lucien was clean through, but flagged offside in a very tight decision. Imortal finished the half on top, but one or two heavy tackles and free kicks awarded against them had the home crowd howling.

The second half started much the same as the first, the game was scrappy and the wind getting stronger. Guia had a half chance early on that came to nothing. Lucien was hacked down twenty yards out, but the resulting free kick was totally wasted.

A great take here by Lucien, but he was thwarted before he could shoot.

Juelson replaced Lucien with just over half an hour left and immediately set to task, chasing everything across the middle and down the left.

Paollo on the right wing was also given his marker a hard time. Guia's right back was in the linesman's ear the whole time, whingeing about anything and everything. Every now and then he did get a decent tackle or block in, there was no way through it seemed.

Coming up to the half hour mark, Imortal gave a away a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, Rodrigues and Chico both managed to get booked as a result. The free kick was very poor, I could have stopped it.

Then the tide swung firmly in Imortal's favour. Four corners were forced in the space of two minutes, Guia's defence was at full stretch, bodies everywhere. Imortal were completely on top, Guia barely left their half.

A shot just over the bar.

Chico forced a good save as normal time drew to a close. Nil - nil written all over it, the magic words worked and Juelson's efforts paid off. He did get himself booked for over doing the celebrations.

That was Imortal's first win in three games and good boost to confidence.

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 4 - 2 PADERNENSE

An end of season agme livened up by some good goals and the kind of sending off that makes you wonder whether to laugh or cry. Imortal in a in fairlyt decent run of results at the moment, just the one defeat in the last sdix league matches. A win was expected against Padernense, who were virtually cerain to be relegated even if they won.

It was pretty scrappy throughout, not helped by the now usual gusting wind.

Clear cut chances were few, although Barradas for Imortal had an early opportunity which he put wide from 8 yards. Lucien, my man of teh match, had a good chanve but shot high when he had more time than eprhaps he though. A couple of counter attacks by Paderne came to nothing and we were wondering whether anyone would score when, after 30 minutes, Paderne took the lead.

A long clearance with the wind caught the Imortal defence by surprise, central defender and captain Pedro Rodrigues found himself facing two opponents on the edge of the penalty area. Caught in two minds, he left the wrong man, midfielder Pires, who turned and shot very expertly into the bottom corner of the goal giving goalie Bernardo no chance. Paderne were improvng but ther lead lasted only four minutes.  The ref adjudged a cross to have been interceptted by a defender's hand, penalty given. Barradas stepped up and drilled the ball past the ´keeper for 1-1. Paderne responded with a shot that hit the goalpost with Bernardo stranded.

Half tiem was almost upon us when Lucien was brought down just outside the left hand corner of the penalty area. The free kick was deliveed by Rodrigues, Lucien's effort from close range was blocked, the ball fell to barradas who also saw his shot blocked then the reboudn fell towards Lucien who spun adn shot in one from close range. Imotal thus had a 2-1 lead at half time.

The second half was very silly at times. The players diodn't help hbut the ref did seem to lose the plot at times, flashing seven yellow cards (at least three were for dissent) and one red.

The half began well for Imortal. Five minutes in a superb defence splitting pass from midfielder Chico put Lucien through on goal, his low hard shot from 20 yards was accurate and put Imortal further ahead.

Paderne pulled one back midway through the half, a swift counter attack once again catching Imortal's defence napping and short of numberrs. I couldn't see who scored but it was a first time effort from about 12 yards.

Chico restored Imortal's two goal advantage a few minutes later with a thunderous snap-shot from all of 25 yards that fairly rocketed past the startled goalkeeper.

Then came the sending off. Imortal full back Muguel Oliveira was to be subbed, didn't leave the field quickly enough for the referee's liking and after a 30 yard sprint by the official saw a second yellow (he had been booked a few minutes earlier for a clumsy challenge) and thus saw red.

Imortal were thus obliged to play the last twenty minutes or so with then men. Althougb Paderne did get into danger areas, their finishing was poor and the game gradually fizzled out.

Next Saturday Imortal travel to Quarteira to play Quarteirense.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 10, Paderne 14 including the penalty
Offside : Imortal 6, Paderne 2
Shots on target : Imortal 8, Paderne 4
Shots blocked : Imortal 2, Paderne 1
Shots off target : Imortal 4, Paderne 6
Corners : Imortal 5, Paderne 6
Yellow cards : Imortal 3 (two for dissent, one for a foul), Paderne 7 (one for the handball that lead to the penalty, one for dissent and the rest for fouls)

Albufeira council mini league now stands at

Ferreiras played 5, 15 points
Imortal played 6, 12 points
Paderne played 5, 6 points
Guia played 6, nul points

Imortal 2 - 1 Lagoa and arguably Imortal's best performance of the season. Thus ended Lagoa's hope of winning the league. More later.

IMORTAL 2 LAGOA 1

Arguably Imortal's best performance of the season, certainly the best I have seen for a long while. Lagoa, who were in second place, came knowing they had to win to keep alive any slim chance they had of winning the league. Imortal dealt efficiently with almost everything thrown at them, admittedly owing a debt to goalkeeper Bernardo who made three excellent first half saves to deny the visitors.

Veteran Claudio made a rare start, in midfield, replacing Chico who was among the subs. The game kicked off six minutes late, dark suggestions among the watchers that Lagoa were being crafty so that they would know what was happening in the game involving their rivals Armancanenses.

Also, unusually but presumably given the importance of the game, there were four match officials.

As expected. Lagoa quickly took charge of the game, but it was ten minutes before they had any kind of shot on goal. An ill-advised backpass by Miguel Ferreira was intercepted but a weak shot was also wide.

After the bright start, Lagoa seemed to quickly run out of ideas, allowing Imortal back into the game. Paollo had a half a chance on a counter-attack, but was swiftly out-numbered just inside the penalty area. He then set up Barradas whose tame shot was easily saved. Imortal's main problem was staying onside. Four flags in a few minutes brought attacks to an early end.

Imortal went ahead on 26 minutes. Paollo intercepted an attempted pass in midfield, used his speed to beat two defenders, but confronted by the on rushing goalie, his early shot from twenty yards was going wide. Luckily, Lucien had kept up with him and he seized the wayward shot and steered it into the unguarded goal from close range.

A few minutes later Imortal nearly increased their lead. An atrocious cross by Baldé was rescued out wide by Lucien, he dinked it in to Paollo but the angle was just too tight for his shot, which hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Lagoa responded, Bernardo pulled off two super saves in rapid succession as Lagoa crowded the goalmouth. Another shot was palmed away for  a corner. Eventually the defences were breached five minutes before half time. Hesitation among the ranks allowed Lagoa's Zé Miguel a shot on the turn, powerfully struck from ten yards. Bernardo got a hand to it, but couldn't prevent the goal.

1-1 at half time.

Lagoa's second half performance was poor.  They knew that Armacanenses were winning and that the result would confirm them as champions unless Imortal could be beaten, but they seemed devoid of motivation and ideas and managed not a single shot on target in the second period.

Paollo had a an early chance for Imortal but heading is not his strong point and it flew wide. We had that strangest of events, a foul throw given against Lagoa for not taking it in the right place, when normally anything within 20 yards is considered ok.

It was a stop- start time, with several interruptions for injuries. Baldé eventually succumbed after a couple of heavy challenges and was replaced by Chico. He was soon in action, combining well with Paollo to give the latter a shot that was blocked by several bodies. Lagoa had almost disappeared. It was half way through the half before they managed even a shot of any kind, a rubbish effort that sailed high and wide.

Imortal re-took the lead with a very good goal from Paollo. A huge clearance out of defence by Rodrigues fell nicely for him just inside the Lagoa half. Off he sped, with only one defender keeping him company. The defender was outpaced, Paollo shot low and hard from the corner of the penalty area, across the keeper and into the far corner.´

Lagoa heads, already down with the news from elsewhere, sunk even lower. The final quarter hour was punctuated by a series of yellow cards for fouls and dissent. One of these was a second yellow given when a Lagoa defender requested that Chico be booked for a foul. No said the ref, you're seeing yellow instead and off he trudged having then seen red.

There was time for Rodrigues to strike the crossbar with a long range free-kick awarded after Lucien had been hauled down by the goalkeeper ten yards outside the area.

The final score for Armacanenses was known when the ref at Albufeira announced seven minutes of additional time. Lagoa were beaten, the game played out with no further alarms.

Match stats.

Excellent report Tom. Very professional.
Pity that when we visit in May it's all over, although last September, I watched the youngsters playing on the all weather pitch A pre-season friendly (against Viamoura I think). A friend's son who is 17, plays for one of the junior sides.
Very impressive facilities compared to that level here in the UK.

Indeed they are. Albufeira council has paid for the three full sized 3G pitches and one half size pitch which are in constant use. How many towns of similar size in the Uk can boast the same? Near where I used to live in Kent, some grass pitches were out of commission for almost six months this winter. The one 3G pitch is thus incapable of meeting demand.

Imortal 0 Silves 2

An end of season early evening in which some football was seen every now and then.

Kick off was scheduled for 5pm but we didn't in fact get going until seven minutes past, for no apparent reason!

The game possibly turned on the sending off of Imortal's defender Pedro Silva just before half time. I couldn't quite see what happened as it was right in front of the Imortal subs bench, but former Imortal man Nelson Moutinho was sent flying, the ref produced an immediate red card for Silva.

Two second half goals from the visitors were enough to give them the points. Imortal finish 8th.

The game was very slow to get going, literally nothing to write about until mid way through the first half when Imortal forward Lucien had a couple of chances. The first was a shot from the edge of the area which the goalie fumbled at first then gathered, the second from a rebound after goalkeeper had fumbled a cross in the gusty wind. That shot was also gathered safely.

Silves responded and it took a couple of good tackles to deny another former Imortal man, the lumbering striker Mauro. The other half of Imortal's attacking duo, Paollo, got himself booked for a silly foul and a few minutes later he clattered someone else. Hearts were slightly in mouths but the ref was lenient. Still be charged around like a mad man and got away with another fairly stupid challenge moments before the sending off incident.

After the incident and before half time the ref as seen in front of the Imortal bench, busily writing in his book.

Half time and as the radio reporter put it, a poor game of very few goalscoring opportunities. Silves had just one shot of any description in the first half, Imortal four.

Imortal had to adjust formation at half time. Baldé at first went to left back then later was seen in right midfield. Adaptable he is for sure!

Lucien, who was trying his hardest but to no avail, had two more chances early in the second half. On the first he was too slow and was robbed, for the second he was clean through on goal and blazed over from six yards.

Silves first goal came out of nothing on the hour mark. A raid down the right was at first stopped, but in so doing defender Canito was left sitting on the grass. The ball went loose to one Bruno Theodore, whose shot from twenty yards was low, hard and placed accurately into the bottom corner of the goal.

A dire ten minutes followed, capped by the worst free kick ever seen. Taken by Imortal's Baldé out on the right touchline, I am not sure whether he meant to shoot or cross. He did neither as the ball sped in a straight line down the pitch for a goal kick.

Silves were pressing hard, two forwards got in each other's way amid an outnumbered Imortal defence, Bernardo easily saved. The second goal came on 76 minutes and from Mauro, whose 180º turn and shot belied anything I can remember when he played for us!

Imortal were done for, resorting to a long ball in the wind which was not successful. Defence was abandoned, Silves shut up shop at their end.  Lucien went off injured. In a final flurry of activity, Barradas, hitherto anonymous, drew a good save from the Silves ´keeper, then Rodrigues lofted a free kick way over the bar when he is normally pretty good at that sort of thing.

So ends another season. The final weeks were fairly successful with only two defeats in the final ten games, but a poor sequence of results in October and November was the reason for an eighth place finish.

The new season starts in late September.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 13, Silves 14
Offside : Imortal 5, Silves 4
Shots on target : Imortal 4, Silves 3
Shots off target : Imortal 6, Silves 1
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Silves 0
Corners : Imortal 5, Silves 4
Yellow cards : 1 each
Red Card for P Silva of Imortal.
