Portugal was also struck with a fire tragedy today.
19 people lost their life, most of them in their car when they were surrounded by fire coming from the forest around the IC8 main road near Pedrogrão Grande  in the centre of Portugal.
The extreme heat today with some high wind have caused several fires in the country.
It is feared that the summer will be very hot and dry, so please avoid any risk of causing fire while you enjoy your holiday here and be safe.

Death toll has climbed to 24 confirmed deaths but may possibly rise even more as there are still people missing and areas not reached yet by emergency teams.

Death toll keeps rising. Latest is 57 confirmed dead and over 60 injured but number may still increase as rescue teams are going through isolated houses and small villages looking for more casualties. Over 30 people where found dead in their cars presumably trying to flee the raging fires.
Fires are believed to have been triggered by "dry storms" and exceptional weather conditions. The region is covered with pine trees and eucalyptus forest which fueled the engulfing fires.
Fire in the area is still strong in two fronts and very hard to fight as temperatures will remain very high today. 2 Canadairs have arrived from Spain this morning to help.

Seconded.
But why are people still so stupid? I watched a guy lighting a bbq on/in a field of about 18" dry grass, it is so obvious what the potential, if not likely, consequence is, namely frigging disaster, but they still do it!
Mental.

What a dreadful thing to happen
It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear. Douglas Adams

Looks like a firestorm was created from i have seen and heard. When the heat of the fire reaches a certain level, it creates a vortex not unlike a tornado. The very rapidly rising air draws in the air from around, a funnel is formed and before you know it seems as if the air itself is on fire. The fire almost feeds on itself.

Like a volcano, it throws out burning embers from a massive cloud, called a pyrocumulonimbus, starting more fires often some distance away.

People thought they could drive through or past it. They weren't quick enough.

And yes, why there is no absolute ban of lighting outdoor fies in the present condititions defies undertstanding. We cannot stop lightning strikes, but can stop idiots from setting fire to the countryside.

Albufeira Bombeiros have sent men & equipment to help the firefight in Northern Portugal.
I am sure we all wish them good luck in all they do
