"One of the unused Marítimo subs rejoices in the name of Lynneeker Nakamuta Paes de Albuquerque. His parents must have been 'aving a larf."

Lynneeker does have a certain football ring to it though!

Probably not as his 'official' name on the team sheet is just Lynneeker and anyway he has played just 8 minutes of football this season, nothing to get the fans enthused. His shirt number is 99.

Marítimo has a ridiculous 58 players listed on the official website, including nine goalkeepers! No wonder the clubs here don't have any money.

A good start for the three Algarve teams. Remember that they bring forward half the points they accrued in the first phase. They occupy the first three places.

Next Sunday, all three will be away.

Segunda Liga results from yesterday afternoon

Portimonense 1 - 0 Gil Vicente att 740

A vital win for Portimonense against fellow promotion candidates. A poor game with few chances. Portimonense scored on 75 minutes. After some minutes of pressure, a good free kick from the edge of the area by Ricardo Pessoa was saved well, low down at the post, but 23 (in black and white and half-hidden) Zambujo (my man of the match) was on hand to stab home the rebound.

Portimonense are now 5th, but five points off a promotion place so need some good results in the coming weeks.

Braga B 2 -1 Farense att unknown.

A result that does Farense no good at all. They are now 20th and in the relegation zone.

Olhanense 1 - 1 Varzim att 433

Olhanense are now 12th, mid table but not comfortable as they are only five points between them and the relegation places.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEK'S GAMES

Segunda Liga

Now officially named Ledman Liga Pro after the new Chinese sponsors. Apparently it is a requirement of the sponsorship that Chinese coaches and players are incorporated into the teams. Needless to say this attempt at getting a foothold onto the ladder of world domination in football is being resisted!

Covilhã 0 - 0 Portimonense att 423
Farense 1 - 0 Santa Clara att 621
Oliveirense 1 - 2 Olhanense att 482

Important wins for both Farense and OIhanense, keeping them above the waterline. Olhanense are 11th, with 42 points from 31 games while Farense are 16th, 37 points from 31 games but that's only two points ahead of the relegation zone.

Portimonense remain in fifth place, five points behind the two promotion spots. Luckily for them, two of the three promotable teams ahead of them drew and the other lost.

Next weekend most games are on Saturday rather than Sunday.

Saturday at 1115 for the farcical reason of attracting a huge TV audience

Olhanense v Sporting B

At the more reasonable hour of 1500 / 3pm

Portimonense v Farense, interesting local derby of course.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores Second Phase Group H to avoid relegation

Second match

Juventude Évora    2-2    Castrense
Barreirense    2-0    Almancilense
Pinhalnovense    2-1    Lusitano VRSA
At. Reguengos    1-1    Louletano

Louletatano top the group, Lusitano are third and Almancil 6th.

Next Sunday at 1500hrs / 3pm

Juventude Évora    v    Barreirense
Almancilense    v    Pinhalnovense
Lusitano VRSA    v    At. Reguengos
Castrense        v    Louletano

Algarve League Division One

Padernense    3-2    Guia
Quarteira    0-2    Faro e Benfica
GD Lagoa    1-0    Odiáxere
Moncarapachense    1-1    Armacenenses
Silves    3-0    Esp. Lagos
Monchiquense    0-4    Quarteirense
11 Esperanças    1-4    Ferreiras
Imortal Albufeira    2-2    Culatrense

Lagoa's narrow win over the bottom side, coupled with the draw for Armancanenses means that Lagoa regain top spot on goal difference.

Ferreiras are up to fourth, but seven points behind the top two. Imortal drop to 8th, Guia are 13th and Paderne 14th.

Fixtures next week - first up are the quarter-finals of the Algarve Cup on Wedsnesday 24th, ko 2030hrs / 8.30pm

Lusitano VRSA    v    Imortal Albufeira
Almancilense    v    Esp. Lagos
Quarteirense    v    Ferreiras
Moncarapachense    v    Sambrasense

Then next Saturday at 1500hrs / 3pm except one

Culatrense    -    Padernense    ko 1730hrs at Penha, Faro
Guia    -    Quarteira    SC
Faro e Benfica    -    GD Lagoa        at Horta da Areia, Faro
Odiáxere    -    Moncarapachense
Armacenenses    -    Silves
Esp. Lagos    -    Monchiquense
Quarteirense    -    11 Esperanças
Ferreiras    -    Imortal Albufeira

Algarve League Division Two

Aljezurense    0-4    Sambrasense
Ferreiras B    0-2    Santaluziense
Carvoeiro United    5-2    4 ao Cubo
Marítimo Olhanense    1-1    Messinense

The unexpected draw from Messinense has made the two horse title race with Sambrasense a little closer. They are four points ahead but with a game in hand, which they will catch up next Saturday, when Sambrasense are without a game.

All ko's 1500hrs / 3pm

Messinense    -    Aljezurense
Santaluziense    -    Marítimo Olhanense
4 ao Cubo    -    Ferreiras B     at Olhão Municipal Stadium
Mexilhoeira Grande FC    -    Carvoeiro United

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL

National League, second tier, group D

Guia 1 - 3 Castrense

Guia are 7th of 12. No games in this league next weekend.

Yesterday afternoon's Segunda Liga Results

Santa Clara 1 - 1 Portimonense att 229 (two hundred and twenty-nine)
Freamunde 3 - 0 Farense att unknown
Olhanense 1 - 0 Chaves att unknown, my estimate around 450

Olhanense did their Algarve chums a favour. That defeat for Chaves (2nd place) means Portimonense are still just about in the promotion chase, in sixth place and five points off. Freamunde, by beating Farense, climb to 5th and are level on points with Portimonense, while Farense must start looking over their shoulders again as they are only two points outside the relegation spots.

Olhanense are comfortable in mid-table after yesterday's win. The game was a mixture of messy and reasonably good. Chaves, chasing the title and promotion, had plenty of the ball but rarely tested the home goalkeeper, whose saves were for the most part fairly routine.

The only goal of the games came from the penalty spot after 12 minutes, the referee spotting a handball. The penalty kick was expertly put away by Galassi - pic below.

The rest of the half degenerated into a fairly untidy mess, littered with free kicks. Chaves didn't help themselves with some pretty poor passing, getting offside too many times and some wayward shooting.

The second period saw Chaves pressing forward, desperate for the points. Amazingly, during the first 25 minutes, there were only two free kicks as both sides concentrated on the game itself. Then it got silly again, bookings flowed as Olhanense's defending became even more desperate. Olhanense did manage a couple of attacks on the counter, the final ball was often poor and very loud were the groans when this cross was missed by several red and black heads.

An incident then occurred that was both comical and indicative of the blatant cheating that goes unpunished. Home player Ahmed pulled up near the far touchline with some kind of muscle injury. His initial fall took him three or four yards off the pitch, where he lay ignored for a a good thirty seconds. He then rolled back onto the pitch to try to get the game stopped, no joy as Chaves had the ball. He continued to be ignored and even the home fans were laughing.

Eventually the game was halted, by which time the trainers had run right around the pitch to attend to him. Why he was not booked is a mystery.

A bit of luck nearly went the home side's way almost at the end, a poor clearance by the visiting keeper struck forward Murilo on the six yard line but the rebound was just wide of the post.

Olhanense held out, their ´keeper was booked in stoppage time for the obligatory time wasting, but the referee did not add any extra at the end of the declared five minutes, another error.

The pitch is a bit of a patchwork quilt in places and needs attention. Readers may recall they were actually banned from using it for several months the season before last.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Olhanense 22, Chaves 15 (11 of them in the first half)
Offside : Olhanense 2, Chaves 7
Shots on target: Olhanense 3, Chaves 4
Shots blocked : Olhanense 3, Chaves 1
Shots off target : Olhanense 6, Chaves 6
Corners : Olhanense 4, Chaves 6
Yellow cards : Olhanense 4 all in the second half, two for fouls, one for kicking the ball away at a free kick and the goalie for time wasting; Chaves 3 all for fouls.

Olhanense are at home again next Wednesday afternoon to another of the promotion hopefuls, Gil Vicente.
