It is cup games that weekend, the third round of the FA Cup when the top league teams come in.

Two games in the Algarve as above plus

Louletano v Chaves in Loulé municipal stadium

If planning to travel by bus or train, remember that there are no replays here, it's extra time and penalties on the day if required. All are currently shown as 3pm on Sunday the 18th.

Other matches that weekend for which I cannot confirm times, as even this Saturday's are not yet on the FA website

Algarve League Division One, normally Saturdays ie 17th at 3pm but sometimes changed so do check

Easiest ones to get to first

FC Ferreiras          -      FC Os 11 Esperanças
Guia FC          -      Paderne a sort of local derby but see ladies item at bottom

Directions supplied if required. Bus to Ferreiras easy, Guia not so.

then
CU Culatrense          -      Imortal Albufeira will be at a dreadful place in Faro
Quarteirense      -      JD Monchiquense     in Quarteira
Lagos      -      Silves FC
Sport Faro e Benfica      -      Quarteira SC ditto dreadful place in Faro
Odiaxere          -      GD Lagoa
Os Armacenenses      -      LGC Moncarapachense in Armação de Pêra

Algarve League Second Division the very nadir of football

Carvoeiro United FCCU      -      FC Ferreiras at Estombar I think
4 Ao Cubo - ADO      -      UD Messinense in Olhão
Mexilhoeira Grande FC      -      JC Aljezurense
Santa Luzia     -      UDR Sambrasense

I forgot Guia Ladies score at the weekend. They lost 2-1 at home to Sintra Ladies. On the weekend of 17th aand 18th they are also at home. They normally play on Sundays but I would definitely check both Guia fixtures before committing.

Thanks cubsur I think the FC Ferreiras  v  FC Os 11 Esperanças is the closest match to my hotel. Will post some pics of the match on the forum when I'm back home. Cheers

Oh yes there is!

Horta da Areia in Faro is quite possibly the worst place I have ever paid to watch a match of football. Algarveaddick will agree as he was there as well.

It is surrounded by a disused chemical works, a gypsy camp, the council dustcart depot and a smelly marsh. The 3G pitch has a 5 metre high fence around it between spectators and players. There are no facilities for spectators. The bar was a bloke selling beer out of the back of a van by the entrance.

And the team we played that day are the biggest load of cheats out, even by normal standards here.

A couple of pictures from a different game at the same ground - scroll down the page almost to the bottom.

I concur with Cubsur. Awful place. The day we went the referee added about 10 minutes of (totally justified) injury time due to the tactics of the home side...

Nice pictures on your site by the way Stephen!

Apologies but the cup games at Louletano and Olhanense were both changed to a Saturday kickoff after I had written up the fixtures last Monday.

They both lost, so serves them right if no-one went. Attendances for cup matches are not published anyway.

Yesterday afternoon's Segunda Liga results

Farense 0 - 1 Freamunde att 819
Chaves 0 - 0  Olhanense att 1920
Portimonense 1 - 0 Santa Clara att 523

Portimonense are now in second spot on goal difference, Olhanese are 11th and Farense 13th.

The game in Portimão wasn't very good overall, on a slightly difficult, very dry and bumpy surface. The small crowd did though see an excellent free kick in the 66th minute, by Ricardo Pessoa, expertly despatched from just outside the penalty area, followed a couple of minutes later by a superb reaction save from ´keeper Ferreira from one of the few shots the visitors managed to get on target.

The teams line up before the sparse crowd. There were maybe 100 or so more sitting on the opposite non-members side.

Portimão must be an excellent place to be a criminal when the team is playing at home. I counted 20 of Portimão finest on duty at the game, ready to control the turbulent masses. That's in addition to the half dozen security guards in their para-military outfits. Full bag searches and for some I noticed pockets had to be emptied, perhaps to justify this ludicrous over-policing. What are the authorities afraid of? How much do Portimonense have to pay for this?? There were more people at the Guernsey v Molesey Ryman League Dvision 1 South match last night and I will bet not one policeman.

Spot that the crowd at Chaves has been posted as 1920. That's about 4.7% of the town's population. Either there is not a lot to do in Chaves on a Wednesday  afternoon or hey are very committed.

Their average crowd this season is 2239, making then the second best supported team in the League.

If Portimonense had the same percentages, they would get crowds of around 2,600 every match.
