PORTIMONENSE FIRST LEAGUE MATCH

Bizarre scheduling for the opening round in the Liga Nos, even more bizarre than usual!

The first two games are on Sunday 6th.

Portimonense will open their campaign on MONDAY August 7th vs Boavista, KO 1700hrs ie 5pm. That, by the way, is too late for anyone to be able to get back to Albufeira by bus as that last one is at 1840hrs.

The rest of the first round of matches is spread right through the week until the Thursday! As with previous seasons, ALL matches will be shown live on TV with some games starting at 2100hrs.

Well I can't go!

I have yet to discover what they will be charging to get in, pretty sure it won't be the €5 we enjoyed in the Segunda Liga.

Just found this ad for a friendly next week.

CHANGE TO THIRD TIER SET UP AND EARLIER START

Thanks to Chris Wright for this head up.

Season 2017 - 2018 will start earlier than ever, 20th August, following yet another change in the format!

The third tier will be split into five regional sections each of sixteen teams. The Algarve is included in section E. The five league winners plus the three best runners-up will go into a knockout series to determine which two teams will be promoted to the Segunda Liga.

Seven Algarve teams will be in the League this season  : Olhanense (Olhão, relegated from Segunda Liga), Farense (Faro), Louletano (Loulé), Lusitano VRSA (Vila Real de Santo António), Armacanenses (based in Armação de Pêra), Moncarapachense (Moncarapacho) and Almancil. There will also be two teams from the Azores, who previously had their own little league. That will please the part-timers no end, having to travel nearly 1,000 miles for a game.

First fixtures on 20th August include these games in the Algarve:

Moncarapachense v Castrense
Louletano v Clube Olimpico Montijo
Olhanense v Almancil

KO times likely to be 1700hrs (5pm) to be confirmed nearer the time.

NEW SEASON ALMOST HERE

Off we go again! A new domestic football season is almost upon us.

The Liga Nos, the top league in Portugal, gets under way next Sunday with promoted Portimonense (Portimão) among their number. Their home games against the big boys (Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto) are not until next year.

They start with home match on MONDAY 7th August at the ludicrous hour of 5pm (1700hrs) as TV require, they also have games at 1900 and 2100 the same night. Get used to these crazy times. ALL matches here are shown live on TV and with Portimonense low in the pecking order they will, often as not, get the short straw.

Anyone staying in or near Albufeira wanting to go to a gamehad better have a car at hand. Last bus back to Albufeira is at 1840hrs, so even a 1700ko is too late for the last bus. There are trains back until 2027, the station is about 15 minutes walk from the ground.

There is a small amount of free parking outside the ground, among the tower blocks. The larger municipal parking areas by the river are 5 minutes walk.

I cannot find what they are charging to get in this season. I would imagine it will be more than the €5 they charged last time! Tickets, for now at last, are not being sold other than at the ground on the day.

Anyway, here are their first four matches :

Monday 7th August HOME to Boavista ko 1700hrs
Sunday 13th August away to Braga ko 1800hrs
Friday 18th August away to Rio Ave, ko 2030hrs
Sunday 27th August HOME to Maritimo ko 2000hrs

The Algarve is not represented in the second tier this season, following the promotion of Portimonense and relegation of Olhanense to the third tier. The third tier programme begins on 20th August.

Almost double the average for last season (and around three times most of the crowds they had until the end of season glory hunters came out) and it was reported that they ran out of tickets and had to say 'sold out', despite the ground being only 61% occupied. A lot of tourists present.

Next home game is Sunday night 27th August v Maritimo, 8pm /2000hrs ko.

If that report is true then I hope they have a word with their printers before my trip in the New Year, Cubsur.
Interesting to see how they cope with the big fishes when they are due. Surely their home venue will be moved over to Estadio Algarve.

I hope not. Would be nice to se the pampered ones turn out in Portimao. And of course if they have sense, give priority to regular attenders so the hundreds of thousands of glory hunters miss out.

Report confirmed to me that late arrivals were told there were no more public tickets and therefore they wouldn't be allowed in. 'Several hundred' were in the queue. It is has been the habit at Portimonense to turn up 10 minutes before ko and even up to 20 minutes afterwards. Guess they may  have to change their ways.

I have been informed it was €15 admission at Portimonense on Monday, that's the guideline price for most matches this season. I am sure they will charge more in the New Year when the big boys come to town, or the Estádio do Algarve if it should be so.

Algarve football - next weekend's games

Portimonense will be away again, this time at Rio Ave, Friday night 2030hrs.

The third tier (Campeonato Prio) gets under way this Sunday. After yet another re-organisation, it is split in into five regional groups of sixteen teams for the first phase. With several Algarve teams involved, each week will probably involve a local derby. On the other hand, there are several teams based around Lisbon, so that means a 400km round trip on several Sundays.

This week's games in the Algarve, Sunday 20th August all at 1700hrs / 5pm :

Moncarapachense v Castrense
Louletano v Olimpico Montijo
Olhanense v Almancil

The other Algarve teams, namely Armacanenses (Armacão de Pêra), Farense (Faro) and Lusitano VRSA will be away in various distant parts.

Olhanense will be looking for a quick return to the second division, Farense have been disappointing in recent seasons since their relegation and will want to make some strides. Louletano have done nothing lately. The remaining 'village' teams have only really the struggle to survive. They probably would not want promotion even if their grounds were suitable.

There is nothing yet available about the Algarve League nor the women's football, in which Guia as the only team in the whole of the Algarve, did themselves proud last year, narrowly missing out on a playoff place in their national second tier campaign.
