FERREIRAS 0 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 0

A typical local derby, short on skill and with the same number of yellow cards shown as there were shots at goal. It felt like a win for Imortal at the final whistle, which was greeted by the home fans in stony silence while the Imortal squad went into a prolonged team huddle and fans shouted their congratulations.

I cannot recall having to write so little about any 45 minutes of football for a long time. The first half was a midfield battle, with the teams unable to break the deadlock. There were just two attempts at goal, one from each side. Frustration among the home side's coaching team and fans was evident from the early stages. A series of misplaced passes caused several promising moves to break down, while Imortal were generally content to soak up the pressure.

The midfield wa so crowded that Imortal's duo of Chico and Maia collided heavily going for the same ball, leaving both flat out for a minute. Defender Calado did his bit to stop one attack on the halfway line and was rewarded with a booking. Pedro Rodrigues closed down another with a hefty clearance that sent the ball halfway down the road to Albufeira.

Youngster Diogo was booked for an alleged handball at the free kick and from the resulting clearance was himself flattened.

There was a flurry of activity as the half drew to a close. Imortal's Chico and Paollo Oliveira combined in a good move that was well defended by Ferreiras, Imortal's 'keeper Nelio was finally called into action right on half time when he dived well to block a low shot to the near post.

The second half began with a series of fouls, first Chico was booked then in a short space of time both Oliveira and Baldé were victims of heavy challenges. The wind was getting up a bit, making it fairly difficult to control the ball. Much exasperation on the Ferreiras bench and among the crowd!

Ferreiras had a chance to go ahead after a rare mistake by Imortal's defenders let in striker Pias, but his shot was soft and wide of the target. Imortal had a couple of reasonable efforts, Diogo and Maia were getting into decent positions but shots again were wide. The best chance fell to Rodrigues who seized upon a corner sent over by Chico, but his shot went just the bar.

There was a scare once more for the visitors, a woeful clearance by Nelio was sent back with interest, but another huge clearance by Rodrigues sorted things out, this time it went over the wall at the back.

There was a  frantic last few minutes, full of the customary pushing and shoving after every foul and a fairly huge row when Ferreiras striker Pias was flagged offside when clean through. That one culminated in the Ferreiras assistant coach being 'sent off'. Chico had to go off injured after being caught by a straight arm jab in the chest, Imortal brought on the calm and experienced head of Rui Sacramento to ride out the closing moments of added time.

That's three drawn games in succession for Imortal. It seems to rot has been stopped, but a win would be nice.  Next Saturday they will be at home to Quarteirense, ko 1500hrs / 3pm.

Saturdya 28th - Imortal 1 Quarteirense 1, fourth draw in a row for Imortal. Ho detailed report as the game was played on the 3G pitch where there is now here to sit with note pad to hand. Quarteirense went ahead ahead after 15 minutes following a defensive mix up among Imortal's men. The game ebbed and flowed without many clear chances, although Quarteirense hit a post then Imortal did the same, just as I was coming out of tbhe bar with beers in hand. Those around me said it was Diogo who missed that chance. The same player had the opporunity to equalize early in the sesond half but shot wide when he was cleam through. Imortal did eventually draw level with about 10 minutes of normal time remaining, a good move down the right finished off by Mateus, up from defence, witha side footed effort from a few metres out.

The referee added six minutes of stoppage time (four would have been generous) but despite a lot of effort, neither side posed any problems for the other.

Imortal's next game is away to 11 Esperanças on Saturday 4th, ko 1500hrs at Penha, in Faro, then it's at home to Messinenense the following Saturday. These are the two teams just above Imortal in the table, so a win against either or both would be a big plus.

Next Saturday at home to Messines (11th) ko 1500hrs supposed to be in the main stadium but will check again later in the week.

Yesterday : Imortal 1 Messinense 0 in conditions that can only be described as farcical.
The pitch at half-time was like a boating lake.

More later.

Imortal 1 Messinense 0

As I said, farcical conditions. Any referee in any sensible country would never have allowed the game to start, with large areas of the pitch under water and torrential rain making matters worse by the minute. But they are totally uncaring here, the game must go on.

A token crowd of around 50 fans made their way into the deepest recesses of the stand as the rain was driven into even the rearmost seats by strong winds.

There is almost nothing to say about the first half. Players splashed around like children at a paddling pool. Imortal created three goalscoring chances with one hitting the target in the 34th minute.  A great ball out of midfield by Baldé (who had a good game overall) found Diogo ina dry region on the left. He controlled the ball well and almost in the same movement flicked it over the advancing 'keeper into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Previously João Monteiro had headed over, while defender Marco Santos hit the crossbar with a free kick shortly before half time.

Both teams and the match officials came out in dry kit for the second half, but being dry didn't last long. The wind was increasing and squally bursts of rain made the pitch even wetter in parts. Players were at risk of drowning and several lost their footing completely.

Imortal had the better of the play for the early part of the second half, despite the strong wind being against them, but it was a total lottery in ridiculous conditions.  A couple of Imortal efforts went wide, at the other end Imortal's goalie Nelio was injured when racing out to clear a ball stuck in a big puddle. He recovered after a couple of minutes. There were even a few moments of sunshine towards the end, but it made no difference. Messinense had more of the ball later on, made a few half chances but nothing to cause any concern.

The final minutes of the game were marked by a flurry of subsitutions and several bookings, but not much football until the 90th minute when Messinense got inside the penalty area in numbers, Nelio saving well from a downward header at the foot of a post.  Later he was booked for 'time wasting' when he decided not to chase a ball behind the goal as the wind was blowing it away from him a rate of knots

Imortal's second win in two weeks and it's now six games since the last defeat. They will however be playing the second phase in the 'avoid relegation' group. Recent form does though suggest they should manage that.

Next week a fairly difficult game away to Lagoa, ko 1500hrs.

Match stats such as they are worth it :

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 15, Messinense 14
Offside : Imortal 4, Messinense 1
Shots on target : Imortal 2, Messinense 1
Shots off target : Imortal 4, Messinense 6
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Messinense 3
Corners : Imortal 2, Messinense 5 (all theirs were in the second half)
Yellow cards : Imortal 4, Messinense 3.
Red cards - none

Yesterday - Lagoa 1 - 3 Imortal Great result against the team in third place and it's now seven games unbeaten. I was unable to go as my talents were required on the bowling green at Tavira. We was stuffed!

Lofters and anyone else planning to go next Saturday's game v Lagos note that it will be on the upper 3G pitch. They are obviously not taking a chance on the main pitch with the China v Netherlands women's match scheduled for the following Wednesday.

Coming over on Monday for 3 weeks, being football mad or maybe just mad following Huddersfield Town for 54 years, going to try and take some football in.

I see the womens internationals are taking place, but what are the Imortal fixtures and kick off times etc.

Can you get refreshments at the ground and how much is it in?

The Algarve League Division One is being played in two phases this year. The last game of phase 1 is tomorrow, 25th February. Then Imortal have a week off, the Algarve Cup Quarter Finals are scheduled for 4th March and we were knocked out in Round 2. League resumes in two groups on 11th March and I suppose we might get the fixtures a week or 10 days beforehand. I will put them at http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm - we will be in the lower group, playing to avoid relegation.

There is a bar in the ground (of course!) and it's €2,50 to get in for League matches. Admission to the Women's internationals is free.

There are some games around here on 4th March :

in the Algarve Cup, Lagoa v 11 Esperanças and Quarteirense B v Ferreiras both at 1500hrs, in the Algarve League Division Two Paderne play Maritimo Olhanense at 1600hrs.

The other two Cup ties will be midweek sometimne or other, as they involve teams from the national third tier who play on Sundays. These are Louletano v Silves and Moncarapachense v Lusitano VRSA

Saturday 11th March at 11.15am (TV broadcast) Portimonense (top of the second Division) FC Famalicão, admission 5 Euros, crowd will be around 1,700 so no problem getting in.

I post all the week's games in the other topic every Monday.

Yesterday Imortal 3 Lagos 1, final game of the first phase. Doesn't make any difference to the grand scheme of things. Imortal finished 8th of 12 teams and will be playing in the 'avoid relegation' group in the second phase.

Four wins and four draws in the eight games since the turn of the year does give out good signs for the next round of matches, which we think starts on 11th March.

No detailed report as the game was played on the 3G pitch, where there's nowhere to put a notebook except in the bar, from where you cannot see half the pitch.

Imortal went behind on 15 minutes, a horrible mistake on half way by Matteo lead to a Lagos breakway attack. The attack was repelled at the cost of a corner, that was taken and not properly cleared, a melée ending with a pot shot from among a crowd of players that sneaked in at the far post. Losing the ball in midfield was a recurring theme!

Imortal were back on terms six minutes later, a great jinking run by new young player Bastian ended with him beating two opponents on the edge of the penalty area and blasting an unstoppable shot across the goalkeeper.

Just before half time Imortal went into the lead. The ref played a good advantage giving Paollo and Marco Santos a break, the two exchanged passes into the area and Santos got the final touch from close range. Lagos responded, Imortal lost the ball again but bringing Nélio into action with a fine save low down.

Just after the hour, Imortal went further ahead, Paollo scoring with glancing header from a corner. The game huffed and puffed after that but with no clear scoring chances.

Lagos were given a penalty with 15 minutes remaining of normal time. It was badly taken, Nélio saved by the post and pushed the ball to safety.

Five minutes of additional time were announced. A minute or so into that a big hoo-hah erupted after a free kick to Lagos. Numerous yellow cards and Santos was shown a straight red. Couldn't see what he had done as I was right down the other end. He was asked as he trudged past the crowd on his way off, he didn't answer!

Looks like there was trouble at last week's game. Two of Imortal's coaching staff have been fined and suspended, one for 30 days and one for 45 days.

Also, tomorrow's home fixture has disappeared from the official fixture list. There is nothing on their Facebook page and it's not going to be easy to find out whether the game is on or off.
