1 -1 draw at Faro e Benfica yesterday. Couldn't go as it was switched late in the day and I would not have had time to get there. Not that I like their awful ground anyway!

Imortal 5 Messinense 1

A good win for Imortal and their best result of the season against a poor side. It could have been more, but Imortal did lose their way a bit from time to time.

The pitch was immaculate, weather sunny and dry but a bit windy from time to time.

Messinense actually began the better side, Imortal's 'keeper Nelio was called into action three times in the first ten minutes as the defence in front of him was breached. Imortal gradually settled down and with Paollo Oliveira having a good game up front chances started to come.

Mid way through the half Imortal took the lead. A free kick was floated in from the rigth by Baldé, it crossed right over to the far side where Oliveira was waiting. A stooping header guided the ball past the visiting custodian.

Two more good chances swiftly followed, the crossbar being struck with one, and five minutes later it was 2-0. A nice pass again by Baldé found Maia on a nice little run into the box. He had to do no more than roll the ball into the net from ten yards with defenders and 'keeper all at sea.

A minute before half time it was 3-0, Oliveira again the scorer with an easy close range tap-in after good work in midfield by Santos.

There was one response by Messinense after that, but a good tipover save by Nelio kept it at 3-0 at the interval.

Messinense straggled out for the second half looking a beaten team and perhaps Imortal took a rest. For the first quarter hour, although Imortal had a ot of the ball the final pass was poor and chances went a-begging.

Imortal's torpor was pretty deep on the hour. Messinense took advantage and put together a very decent move that no-one dealt with, leaving Nelio waving his arms in frustration when beaten by a close range shot from an unmarked opponent.

The game carried on being messy and disorganised. Oliveria managed to get himself booked for a silly foul miles from anywhere. He had another chance, looking suspiciously offside, but the Messinense keeper saved well. Oliveria went down injured, went off for a couple of minutes, came back, but didn't fully recover and was later subbed by Chico.

Chico was immediately into the game, his first involvement was to be chopped down on the halfway line. Five minutes before the end of normal time, he weaved his way into the penalty area, was barged over unceremoniously and gained a penalty. Baldé lined up and powered it low and hard into the net for 4-1.

Veteran defender Canito made the mistake of getting involved in a hefty challenge with former Imortal player Marco Benje, struggled to his feet and had to be taken off.

In the time added on for that, Imortal scored again, the scorer being a player up from the juniors whose I understood to be Walter. His was a good goal, a good pass enabled him to cut inside the last defender and drill the ball past the helpless goalie.

That's three second phase games played, one defeat, one draw and one win so far.

Imortal's next game is on Saturday, away to the 11 Esperanças in Faro, ko 1715hrs.

Well finally the pigeon carrying the score from the game Imortal played on Saturday evening managed to find its way the 150 yards from the ground to the Algarve FA HQ.

Imortal won 2-1, which puts them in a good position ten points above the relegation line.

Imortal 1 Culatrense 0, a good game and good stuff from Imortal as they played 50 minutes with only 10 men. If Paollo Oliveira had put on his shooting boots, it could easily have been four or five.

More later.

Imortal have no game next weekend. The Algarve League does not play over the Easter holiday.

Imortal 1 Culatrense 0

Other than for around five minutes at the end of each half, Imortal totally dominated the game. It could have easily been five or six but for woeful finishing . Paollo Oliveira must have missed about six fairly easy chances on his own. And all that playing for 50 minutes with ten men after defender Fischer got himself booked twice in 5 minutes and of course saw red.

It was a rather windy afternoon, sunny though. Plenty of noisy fans from Culatra swelled the crowd to about 100. Any hefty clearance out of defence went the length of the pitch, something which Imortal tried to exploit with the wind at their backs in the second half. Time and again Oliveira was put through, time and again he missed or had a tame shot blocked.

After a scrappy start, Imortal began to create goal scoring chances. The first fell to midfielder Marco Santos, who headed a great cross just over, then Oliveria had two good chances within the space of five minutes, both were easily stopped.

Eventually, Imortal took the lead after a good passing move down the left finished with a graet cross by wing back Tiaginho, the cross met on the six yard line by Marciano who had no more than a tap in with defenders and 'keeper totally beaten.

Imortal's goalie Nelio was twice called into action late in the first half, a snapshot was tipped over the bar for a corner, then everyone got themselves into a bit of a mess defensively, requiring him to get down low to block a close range shot.

Oliveira's bad day continued within the first minute of the restart. He did what he often does well, turning defenders inside out but then he shot miles over. Santos joined in the miss parade, htting a shot into space from eight yards, two more chances fell to Oliveira but twice the goallkeeper got in his way. On the half hour, there two more opportunities for him, first a  one on one with the 'keeper after one of said hefty boots upfield but ended with a wild shot, another was closer, but again he was one on one and just couldn't make up his mind what to do.

After all that it was no surprise that Culatrense began to push hard for the equaliser but luckily for Imortal they were hopeless in front of goal and kept getting offside as well. There was one slightly scary moment right at the end when Nelio at last had something to do, grabbing a deflected shot as it spun goalwards.

Match stats

Imortal 21, Culatrense 14 - the ref was a bit picky at times.
Offside - Imortal 3, Culatrense 5
Shots on tagret - Imortal 6, Culatrense 3
Shots blocked - Imortal 3, Culatrense 2
Shots off target - Imortal 9, Culatrense 2
Corners - Imortal 6, Culatrense 4

Yellow cards - Imortal 1, Culatrense 2
Red cards - Imortal 1 (2 x yellow)

Yesterday, Imortal 2 - 0 Silves. A routine win against a strangely ineffective Silves side. Imortal are now top of the 'relegation' group and with four games remaining are now mathematicaly safe from the threat of relegation.

In terms of overall form, Imortal have lost only one of the 14 matches played since the turn of the year. Pity about the first part of the season! More later.

Good to see them turn their poor form around, we saw them play Culatrense in cup game in December, great afternoon out with some great hospitality before the game too.
The season is finished by time we are next over at the end of May but hopefully see them again in October.

When are next seasons fixtures announced?

Imortal Albufeira 2 Silves 0

A fairly easy win for Imortal in the end. Silves were hardly a threat, except for the first fifteen minutes or so of the second half, when they foreced five corners in a very short space of time. But Imortal's early two goal lead was not really threatened, with the defenders working well to deal with any raids.

It was sunny but quite windy, especially during the first hour. After a scrappy first ten minutes, Paollo Oliveira put Imortal ahead. The visitors defence failed to deal with a floaty cross, giving Imortal's striker the chance for a short run at goal from the edge of the penalty area, which he finished with a low and hard shot. Silves had a chance from a corner soon afterwards, but six minutes after the opener, Imortal went further ahead. A good move down the right wing was rounded off with a low cross from Zica, the defenders all missed it giving Bastian a tap-in at the far post.

Not a lot happened for the next half an hour until the interval. There was thiugh one slightly scary moment for Imortal. Normally reliable 'keeper Nelio flapped a bit at a cross caught in the wind, not making good contact. He was relieved to see it bounce away for a corner with strikers lurking. The goals apart, the half time stats were pretty much the same for both teams.

Silves, playing into the wind, began the second half perhaps with a half time managerial dressing down ringing in their ears.  Within the first fifteen minutes, they had forced five corners and Nelio needing to make made a good save low down to block a shot on target. The pressure continued until the half hour mark. Full back Tiaginho was booked for a silly foul on half way, the free kick came to nothing. Another left wing attack was thwarted by a huge clearance over the goal from captain Rodrigues, which is possibly still heading towards the coast of Morocco.

The storm weathered, Imortal gradually came back into the game. A couple of questionable offside decisions prematurely ended promising attacks. Oliveira had  chance to seal the game five minutes before the end of normal time, but his tame effort was easily saved. A well struck free kick by Silves' former Imortal midfield man Nelson Moutinho luckily went straight into Nelio's arms, a certain goal had it been a foot either side of him. Right at the end, Nelio fumbled a cross, but recovered to easily stop the shot on the rebound.

So for Imortal that's only one defeat in their last fourteen games, that being the reverse fixture of this second phase at Silves. A big turnaround from the dismal run of eleven games without a win previously.

Next Saturday Imortal host Faro e Benfica. The previous three games this season between the two sides have all been 1-1 draws.

Match Stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 15, Silves 15
Offside : Imortal 8, Silves 4
Shots on target : Imortal 4, Silves 4
Shots off target : Imortal 3, Silves 4
Shots blocked : Imoratl 3, Silves 3
Corners : Imortal 5, Silves 12 (nine in the second half)
Yellow cards : one each

IMORTAL 3 - 0 FARO E BENFICA

Imortal made it five straight wins and three clean sheets in a row with this win against a poor side. Having taken the lead after just 17 seconds, Imortal were troubled more by the gusty wind that anything the opposition could manage. Imortal's goalkeeper Nelio was virtually a spectator until the last minute of the first half, when the visitors finally managed a shot or two.

Half the crowd of about 100 were still in the bar when a hopeful punt from the kickoff was picked up by Bastian, his run took him into the penalty area where his first shot was blocked by the´keeper, but he was there to prod the rebound into the net from a sharp angle. Just seventeen seconds by my watch.

Imortal dominated the game, with several chances coming their way. Marco Santos, Paollo Oliveira and Bastian again all had shots saved or blocked. Very soon, Imortal had adopted a 3 - 3 - 4 formation, so weak was the challenge.

Effort was eventually rewarded after 38 minutes. There was a foul in midfield, the ball broke to Bastian down the right. The ref played a good advantage, something not often seen here, Bastian's swift run was rounded off with a great cross which Santos hammered in low and hard from the edge of the penalty area. Lots of protests about 'offside' followed, which were carried on until the officials were leaving the field at half time.

Bastian had another chance shortly before half-time, after which Faro e Benfica finally came to life. They woke up Nelio in the home goal who had to beat out a shot with his fist, the rebound was accurately struck towards goal, but two defenders were on hand to block and clear off the line.

Imortal had the wind at their backs for the second half, but it was the visitors who started better. They won their first corner of the game early on, forcing Imortal into a series of fairly rash challenges which resulted in five free kicks conceded within the first twelve minutes.  Nothign came of any of them, to the disgust of a member of their coaching staff in the cheap seats who was obviously serving a touchline ban! Imortal weathered the storm and increased their lead after a a quarter of an hour. Good work in midfield by Santos, a great pass to Bastian set up his shot, which was well saved but Zica was on hand to slam in the loose ball from close range.

Imortal then settled back, content to let the vistors run around while keeping any threat well under control. They didn't get a corner until ten minutes or so before the end. The game was drifting towards its inevitable conclusion when, a rare raid towards the enemy goal,  Oliveira was comprehensively blocked and was suitably astonished to have a free kick given against him for running at the defender. Just before the end, a corner by Baldé was headed just wide by Pedro Rodrigues for what should have been a justified fourth.

Imortal's next game is away at Messinense on Saturday, ko time as yet unknown. I shall be unable to attend, being in the UK to mark, among other things, the closing down of the Tonbridge and District Football League after 118 years. Lack of numbers, general decline in outdoor sports, change in social values, etc etc.
