Segunda Liga results from yesterday afternoon

Atlético 0 - 1 Farense att 180 (Yes, one hundred and eighttttyyy) a win that keeps Farense four points above the relegation zone.

Penafiel 1 - 1 Portimonense att 358 a good point for Portimonense who are back in 5th place, three points off the two promotion places.

Olhanense 2 - 1 Covilhã att unknown but about 400 same as last week. Olhanense are now 6th and 1 point behind Portimonense.

I went to the Olhanense match. It wasn't as a good a game as last week, mainly because there was very little football played among the fouls, squabbles, red and yellow cards and general misconduct.

Covilhã took an early lead, a well taken shot from the edge of the area after the home defence has messed up a simple clearance.

It all started after about 18 minutes when an Olhanense player was barged into the visitors dugout. Something was said or done, I couldn't see from my position but a general melée ensued which even stirred the police into taking a few steps towards the belligerents. Order was restored, sort of, but a few minutes later a Covilhã player was sent off for what I can only describe as a revenge tackle. Another melée on the field and by now several home fans were up on the railing behind the visitors bench, screaming abuse and in one case, spitting at the manager who was standing in the technical area. This carried on for almost the whole of the rest of the game.

Olhanenese equalised while the Covilhã team was still getting itself re-organised, which prompted another round of abuse. A fairly senior looking cop had to restrain one fan who was totally losing it.

1-1 at half time. The second half was a repeat of the first. Olhanense regained the lead on the hour then with fifteen minutes left, the Covilhã captain was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

The nine men then threw caution to the winds, piling forward hurling long balls into the area and there was a distinct sense of unease among the masses as the equaliser nearly came when a long range shot whistled just over the bar.

Cue hysteria at the end. There is one middle aged woman in Olhão who will have been very hoarse this morning after her non stop efforts in creative abuse!

An eventful afternoon.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS - NEXT GAMES

Segunda Liga

Chaves 2 - 2 Portimonense att 1791. A last gasp  equaliser from sub Carvalhas gained Portimonense a valuable point up north in Chaves, who are third at the moment.
Olhanense 0 -  2 Leixões 2 att 321
Aves 2 - 0 Farense att 402

Portimonense are now 8th and six points off the two promotion places. Olhanense drop to 11th, Farense are 16th and only two points above the relegation zone.

There are no games in this league next weekend. The next match involving any of them is Monday night 28th December, Portimonense v Arouca in the League Cup. Kickoff will be 1800hrs / 6pm.

Lusitano VRSA are the highest placed Algarve team, being fourth in the ten team group. Almancil are 5th, Louletano stay in bottom place.

Again, there are no games next weekend. With only four games left in the first phase, Louletano are certain to be in the ´relegation´group in the second phase while the other two Algarve teams need to win a couple to have a chance of being in the promotion group.

Algarve League Division One

Moncarapachense    0-1    Silves
GD Lagoa    3-1    Monchiquense
Quarteira        0-1    11 Esperanças
Padernense    1-3    Imortal Albufeira
Faro e Benfica    1-4    Quarteirense
Odiáxere        1-3    Esp. Lagos

Algarve League Division Two

Carvoeiro United    2-2    Sambrasense
Mexilhoeira Grande FC    5-0    Marítimo Olhanense

4 ao Cubo    ??    Aljezurense played Saturday night and obviously the pigeon with the result has got lost.

Messinense are six points clear of Santaluziense and Mexilhoeira Grande at the top of the table.

There are no Algarve League games for the next two weekends. The only match currently scheduled for the interim is the Division One game between Ferreiras and Padernense, next Wednesday 23rd December at 830pm. This has been brought forward from January 9th.

LAST WEEKEND'S MATCHES NEXT WEEK'S GAMES

There was no football played in Portugal on December 26th and 27th.

Forthcoming fixtures :

Monday 28th December ko 1800hrs

League Cup Third phase - Portimonense v Arouca

Segunda Liga

Sunday 3rd January

Portimonense v Varzim ko 1500hrs
Farense v Gil Vicente ko 1500hrs

Campeonato Nacional Seniores First Phase Group H

Sunday 3rd January ko 1500hrs one match in the Algarve

Louletano v Moura

ALGARVE LEAGUE

There are no fixtures on 2nd January. There was one game played  last Wednesday night, Ferreiras v Paderne but the result is not shown anywhere I can find.

Algarve League resumes on 9th January.

In other news, FC Porto have signed at 10 year sponsorship contract with Portugal Telecom worth 457,000,000 Euros from July 2018. In advance of that, their TV rights are vested to PT from January 2016 meaning that anyone wanting to watch FC Porto on TV must subscribe to the 'Porto channel'.

Also, an interesting one from an U17 inter-regional futsal tournament held last week. The team from Setubal deliberately scored an own goal 30 seconds from the end of a group game against the Algarve side. This was done so that they would lose the match and avoid difficult opponents in the next round. The whole Setubal team was promptly chucked out of the competition and banned for two matches! The decision refers to the ethics and spirit of the game.

(The Algarve team lost 6-1 to Lisbon in what was effectively the final.)

With three matches remaining, Louletano are almost certain to be consigned to the relegation group in the second phase. The other two Algarve teams, Almancil and Lusitano VRSA, will join them if they don't win at least two of the games left. As the two are playing each other, that will be a tense affair!

Next Sunday in the Algarve at 1500hrs / 3pm

Lusitano VRSA    v    Almancilense

Louletano travel to bottom side Pinhalnovense in a game that is largely academic.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES

Segunda Liga

Benfica B 2 - 3 Olhanense att 585
Farense 1 -0 Viseu att unknown
Portimonense 2 - 1 Porto B att 998

A good win for Portimonense over the league leaders but other results mean they stay 6th and three points off the promotion places. Olhanense are up to 9th, while a vital win for Farense takes them four points clear of the relegation zone.

Next weekend

Olhanense v Famalicão Sunday 17th January ko 3pm / 1500hrs

Portimonense will be playing on Saturday morning (for TV) up at Viseu, Farense travel on Sunday to bottom side Oliveirense.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores First Phase Group H

Lusitano VRSA    1-0    Almancilense

Pinhalnovense    2-2    Louletano
At. Reguengos    0-2    Cova da Piedade
Juventude Évora    1-0    Barreirense

With two games of the first phase remaining, Louletano are definitely going to be in the 'relegation' group. Almancil have only the thinnest mathematical chance of not joining them. Lusitano need to win next week and hope that the other two Algarve teams do them a favour and take poiints off their rivals for the second place in the 'promotion' group in Phase two.

Next Sunday at 3pm / 1500hrs

Lusitano VRSA (4th in the group)     v    Barreirense    (5th)
