LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEK'S GAMES

Segunda Liga

Farense 2  - 2 Famalicão att 729
Portimonense 1 - 0 Oriental att 806
Viseu 0 - 0 Olhanense att unknown

Portimonense go up to 5th and are now four points off a promotion place, but wins for everyone else in the top positions (except Famalicão) mean that the situation is still fluid and close.

Olhanense are 9th, Farense 17th and only three points off the relegation places.

There is a busy Segunda Liga programme again this Wednesday afternoon, 16th March.

Olhanense entertain one of the title aspirants, Gil Vicente, kickoff will be at 3pm / 1500hrs.

Farense go to Benfica B in a 4pm ko live on Benfica TV channel. Portimonense travel to Famalicão in a 'six-pointer' but not until Easter Saturday, 26th March. Obviously neither side is troubled by international call-ups!

(Yes, in case you hadn't noticed, the world football authorities have, in their infinite wisdom, designated the Easter period as one for International matches which for European teams are friendlies. Thus there will be no top flight football anywhere over that period.)

Next Sunday 20th March

Portimonense v Benfica B 11.15am ko for live TV
Farense v Leixões ko 1500 / 3pm
Olhanense travel to Mafra.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores

Second Phase, Group H

Barreirense    0-2    Pinhalnovense
Juventude Évora    2-0    At. Reguengos
Almancilense    3-0    Louletano
Castrense        3-1    Lusitano VRSA

Defeat for Lusitano puts them on the edge of the relegation playoff places, but overall it is a tight group with only five points separating Louletano in first place with Pinhalnovense, in sixth and the relegation area.

Next Sunday ko 1500 / 3pm

Castrense        v    Pinhalnovense
At. Reguengos    v    Barreirense
Louletano        v    Juventude Évora
Lusitano VRSA    v    Almancilense

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

Padernense    1-6    GD Lagoa
Guia        2-4    Moncarapachense
Faro e Benfica    2-3    Silves
Odiáxere        1-1    Monchiquense
Esp. Lagos    1-2    Imortal Albufeira
Quarteirense    2-1    Ferreiras
Culatrense    0-1    Quarteira    SC
Armacenenses    5-1    11 Esperanças

Lagoa and Armacanenses remain locked together at the top, both have 54 points. There is then a six point gap to Quarteirense in third, so it does now look like a two horse race. Imortal are up to 9th on 27 points, Guia are 13th and Paderne 14th.

Next Saturday at 3pm / 1500hrs unless stated otherwise

GD Lagoa        -    Quarteira SC
Moncarapachense    -    Padernense
Silves        -    Guia
Monchiquense    -    Faro e Benfica
11 Esperanças    -    Odiáxere    at Penha, Faro
Imortal Albufeira    -    Armacenenses    no love lost between these two and a vital game for the visitors!
Ferreiras        -    Esp. Lagos ko 1600hrs / 4pm
Quarteirense    -    Culatrense

NB according to the Algarve FA website the Imortal game will be on the top 3G pitch, not the main stadium.

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL

National League Second tier group D

Guia 1 - 3 CAC Guia remain in 7th place after that home defeat against the league leaders.

Guia will be away next weekend.

Hi Cubsur, hoping you can help.

I'm coming over to the Algarve for a week on Sunday (20/03/16), arriving at the back of 10am.

We are staying in Vila Sol.

Can you tell me what games, if any, are closest to there?

I looked at the teams from Algarve that were playing but getting their stadium names and looking at it on the map proving quite difficult.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,
Neale.

Ok on that Sunday, with Portimonense playing in the morning, the only second division game you can possibly get to is at Farense. Their ground is the São Luis stadium right in the middle of the city, near the main regional hospital complex.

Map - https://goo.gl/maps/egnswRJY2nw find Rua Sporting C Farense then zoom out to find the way there. For some reason the stadium isn't marked on the map, but if you switch to satellite view you will see it plain enough.

If you have a car, it's a drive all the way back to Faro and allow plenty of time to find somewhere to park! Without a car, it's pretty hard work as very little public transport runs on Sundays. Let me know if you want more info about that.

The two third Division games that afternoon are at 3pm

Louletano        v    Juventude Évora     in Loulé municipal stadium, 30 minutes drive from here and
Lusitano VRSA    v    Almancilense way over in Vila Real de Santo António.

There's nothing midweek. Over Easter weekend, if you are still here, these games are nearby, but very little because of the internationals.

Saturday 26th Algarve League 3pm perhaps

Guia v Monchique and Paderne v Silves

Guia's neat ground is about 4 miles from Albufeira, just off the road to Algoz after the roundabout with the chickens on it, Paderne's place is a bit further, as you enter the village and impossible to miss. The bus from Albufeira stops outside.

Imortal Albufeira also Ferreiras will be away out in the wilds.

Also, there is no football on Easter Sunday because of the religious nature of the day. The only third division game that weekend down here is on Saturday 26th at Almancil, where they play Castrense. Ko 3pm also.

You will of course be able to watch the various international friendlies in the alehouses of Albufeira.

I hope that helps, let me know if you need anything more.

Olhanense 0 Gil Vicente 0

Having still got the sniffles, I thought some fresh air and a game of football yesterday afternoon might do me some good. Wrong. I went to Olhanense v Gil Vicente, the latter being among the promotion challengers.

I should have looked at the recent scores. Olhanense had scored only twice in their previous four games, those being an own goal and a penalty while Gil Vicente's away form is dire. So the end product was a 0-0 draw, only a couple of shots on target throughout, 41 free kicks although the ref managed to book only two players and a 'crowd' of 309! And I still suffer!

Ohanense have now gone five games without a defeat, but with three 0-0 draws included. They are now 10th. Farense went to Benfica B, lost 2-0 and drop to 20th and into the relegation zone. Crowd there 539.

Portimonense were without a game.

A shot by Olhanense number 35, Amuzie, goes wide

A late scramble after a corner, the massed defence of Gil Vicente managed to block the effort with ease.

Last weekend's results next week's games

Segunda Liga

Portimonense 1 - 0 Benfica B att 897
Mafra 1 - 0 Olhanense att 473
Farense 3 - 0 Leixões att unknown

A vital three points for Farense that lifts them out of the relegation zone. it's close down there though, with only 5 points separating 15th from 22nd. The bottom two, in 23rd and 24th place, now look doomed.

Portimonense are back in 5th place and three points off the second promotion place. Olhanense are 10th.

Next Saturday 26th March

Portimonense (5th) will host Freamunde (6th) in an important game for both teams. Ko 3pm / 1500hrs. Olhanense and Farense do not have a game, as the international match week means no general fixture list.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores Second Phase Group H

Lusitano VRSA    0-2    Almancilense
Castrense    2-2    Pinhalnovense
At. Reguengos    1-2    Barreirense
 Louletano    2-0    Juventude Évora

Louletano top the group after six of the fourteen match second phase. Almancilense are third, Lusitano slip into 6th and the relegation zone.

Next weekend NB on Saturday owing to the Easter Sunday holiday. Only one game in the Algarve, at Almancil, ko 1500hrs / 3pm

Pinhalnovense    v    At. Reguengos
Barreirense    v    Louletano
Juventude Évora    v    Lusitano VRSA
Almancilense    v    Castrense

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

GD Lagoa        1-2    Quarteira SC
Moncarapachense    4-0    Padernense
Silves        2-2    Guia
Monchiquense    1-3    Faro e Benfica
11 Esperanças    3-1    Odiáxere
Imortal Albufeira    2-2    Armacenenses
Quarteirense    7-0    Culatrense
Ferreiras        3-0    Esp. Lagos

A bit of a shock at Lagoa, where the leaders were beaten by mid table outfit Quarteira SC. It was only their second league defeat of the season and the news was greeted with great glee by the supporters of Armacanenses, who had travelled to Albufeira for their game against Imortal. Armacanenses now take over at the top of table from Lagoa by one point. Quarteirense are four points behind in third spot, while Ferreiras in fourth are not completely out of the running. There are eight games remaining.

Imortal are 9th, Guia 13th and Padernense 14th.

Next Saturday, ko times and venues according to official FA website. All games are at 1500hrs / 3pm unless sated otherwise.

Culatrense    v    GD Lagoa     at Penha, ko 1715hrs
Quarteira SC     v    Moncarapachense
Padernense    v    Silves
Guia        v    Monchiquense
Faro e Benfica    v    11 Esperanças    at Horta da Areia, Faro
Odiáxere        v    Imortal Albufeira
Armacenenses    v    Ferreiras
Esp. Lagos    v    Quarteirense

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

It never occurred to me that they would promotion playoffs!

Anyway, the top four are playing another round of matches it seems.

Match 1

Sambrasense    3-0    Mexilhoeira Grande FC
Messinense    2-0    Santaluziense

Match 2 is not until 2nd April

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL NATIONAL SECOND TIER GROUP D

Bairro Santo António    1-6    Guia

Guia remain in 7th place.

According to the various websites they will be playing on FRIDAY (Good Friday) at 1500/3pm at home to bottom club Olimpico Montijo. Should be a goal fest as the visitors have lost all of their 18 league games, have scored only three goals and conceded 143.

Only Portimonense of the Second Division teams played at the weekend. They got a good 1-1 draw at fellow promotion aspirants Famalicao in front of one of the biggest crowds in this league so far this season of 3201.

Portimonense are 6th and three points off the promotion places.

More about the other games later.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS, NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES

Delayed as I was enjoying the pleasures a every windy, very cold and wet afternoon at Dulwich Hamlet FC, followed by the odd pint or two.

http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/news/dulwich-hamlet-2-1-tonbridge-angels-1588432.html

Note the crowd, 1434 which is a little more than Dulwich's average. The dismal weather probably discouraged a few, but consider this is the seventh tier of English football and compare with the attendances in the Portuguese SECOND division which are averaging around half that number.

There were though considerably more at the football hotbed of Famalicao on Saturday, when two of the promotion prospects met.

Portugal Segunda Liga

Famalicao 1 Portimonese 1 att 3201

With nine games remaining, Portimonense are sixth with 61 points. As the leaders FC Porto cannot be promoted, that in effect puts Portimonense fifth and five points behind Chaves in second place.

Olhanense and Farense were not engaged, so everyone has now played the same number of games.

Next weekend's games

FRIDAY 1st April at 1900hrs Olhanense v Feirense

Portimonense and Farense both travel to distant parts.

There is a full programme next Wednesday afternoon, 6th April.

Matches in the Algarve

Portimonense (6th) v Freamunde (4th) ko 1600hrs / 4pm
Farense (18th) v Feirense (13th) ko 1700hrs / 5pm

Olhanense travel to Braga B.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores Group H second phase

Pinhalnovense    2-1    At. Reguengos
Barreirense    0-0    Louletano
Juventude Évora    1-1    Lusitano VRSA
Almancilense    1-0    Castrense

Louletano are top, Almancilense second but Lusitano still in the relegation places.

Next Sunday all three Algarve teams will be away.

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

Quarteira    0-2    Moncarapachense
Padernense    1-7    Silves
Faro e Benfica    2-0    11 Esperanças
Odiáxere    3-1    Imortal Albufeira
Armacenenses    2-0    Ferreiras
Esp. Lagos    3-2    Quarteirense
Guia    2-0    Monchiquense
Culatrense    2-3    GD Lagoa

The top two both won, so it's as you were with Armancaneses (58pts), Lagoa (57pts) and Quarteirense (51pts) the only three teams with a realistic chance of the title with seven games left.

Imortal drop to 10th after that ignomnious defeat, Guia are 13th and Paderne 14th.

Next Saturday at 1500hrs / 3pm but check for late changes!

Moncarapachense    -    GD Lagoa
Silves    -    Quarteira
Monchiquense    -    Padernense
11 Esperanças    -    Guia    at Penha, Faro
Imortal Albufeira    -    Faro e Benfica
Ferreiras    -    Odiáxere
Quarteirense    -    Armacenenses
Esp. Lagos    -    Culatrense

ALGARVE LEAGUE SECOND DIVISION SECOND PHASE PLAYOFFS

No games last weekend

Next Saturday at 1500hrs / 3pm

Top Group - second game

Mexilhoeira Grande v Messinense
Santa Luzia v Sambrasense

Bottom Group - second game

Carvoeiro v 4 ao Cubo
Maritimo Olhanese v Aljezurense

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE SECOND DIVISION GROUP D

Guia    10-0    Olímpico Montijo the expected rout of the bottom club. Guia remain in 7th place.

Next Sunday they travel to 9th placed Setubal, a good chance of some points.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEK'S GAMES

Segunda Liga

Leixões 0 - 1 Portimonense 1 att 1005. A vital three points for Portimonense, that keeps them in the promotion race.

The top of the table is this, bearing in mind Porto B cannot be promoted, the second and third placed teams could go up. All teams have played 38 games, 8 to go.

Porto B 70pts
Chaves 69pts
Famalicão 67pts
Freamunde 65pts
Portimonense 64pts
Feirense 63pts

Other results

Friday night Olhanense 0 - 0 Feirense att 288
Sunday Vítoria Guimarães B 2 - 1 Farense no details available

Olhanense are 10th, Farense 19th and only one point above the relegation zone.

There is a full set of midweek matches this Wednesday afternoon 6th April, with the big game being at Portimonense.

Portimonense v Freamunde ko 4pm / 1600hrs. Anyone wishing to go, the ground is in the city centre, admission is 10 Euros, buy tickets at the ticket office by the main entrance but you will go in via gate 6 which is down the side along the main road.

Also Farense v Penafiel ko 5pm / 1700hrs

Olhanense are away at Braga B

Next SATURDAY 9th April, a local derby

Olhanense v Portimonense ko 4.15pm / 1615hrs for live TV broadcast.

Campeonato Nacional Seniores Second Phase Group H

Juventude Évora    2-4    Almancilense
Barreirense    2-1    Lusitano VRSA
Pinhalnovense    3-1    Louletano
At. Reguengos    1-1    Castrense

Almancil now top the group, Louletano slip to third. Lusitano VRSA are 6th and within the relegation places.

Next Sunday at 4pm / 1600hrs all three Algarve teams will be at home

Castrense    v    Juventude Évora
Almancilense    v    Barreirense
Lusitano VRSA    v    Pinhalnovense
Louletano     v    At. Reguengos

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

Moncarapachense    1-0    GD Lagoa
Silves    1-1    Quarteira
Monchiquense    2-1    Padernense
11 Esperanças    1-1    Guia
Imortal Albufeira    1-1    Faro e Benfica
Ferreiras    0-1    Odiáxere
Quarteirense    0-1    Armacenenses
Esp. Lagos    2-2    Culatrense

That defeat for Lagoa means that, for the first time in months, there is now daylight between Armacanenses on top (61pts) and Lagoa 2nd (57pts) with Quarteirense a distant third on 51pts.

Imortal are 10th, Guia 13th and with Odiáxere winning for second time in two weeks, Paderne are now bottom.

From what I understand, even the team finishing in 10th place could be relegated to balance the numbers should all three Algarve teams be relegated from the CNS (above) but this looks unlikely.

NEXT SATURDAY AND NOTE THEY ARE NOW MOSTLY 4pm /1600hrs ko's FROM NOW ON

GD Lagoa    v     Silves
Quarteira    v    Monchiquense
Padernense    v    11 Esperanças
Guia    v    Imortal Albufeira
Faro e Benfica    v    Ferreiras   at Horta da Areia, Faro
Odiáxere    v    Quarteirense
Armacenenses    v    Esp. Lagos
Culatrense    v    Moncarapachense ko 6.15pm / 1815hrs at Penha, Faro

ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION TWO SECOND PHASE

Top group

Mexilhoeira Grande FC    1-1    Messinense
Santaluziense    1-2    Sambrasense

Messinense are five points ahead and pretty much certainties for the single promotion place.

A win next Saturday against second palced Sambrasense would all but guarantee that. Kickoffs 4pm / 1600hrs

Santaluziense    v    Mexilhoeira Grande FC
Messinense    v    Sambrasense

Bottom Group

Carvoeiro United    0-1    4 ao Cubo
Marítimo Olhanense    4-1    Aljezurense

These games are an exercise in futility if ever there was. Absolutely nothing to play for, as there is no where to be relegated to!

Next Saturday at 4pm / 1600hrs

Ferreiras B    v    Carvoeiro United    on the training pitch at Ferreiras
4 ao Cubo    v    Marítimo Olhanense at the Olhão Municipal Stadium

Women's Football national League Second tier group D

CAC    5-0    Malveira da Serra
Bairro Santo António    1-2    Castrense
Olímpico Montijo    0-7    Quintajense
Esc. Fut. Fem. Setúbal    3-4    Guia
Estoril Praia    2-0    Belenenses
Paio Pires FC    7-0    Sintrense

A good win for Guia takes them up to 6th.

Next Sunday at 4pm / 1600hrs

Guia    v    Estoril Praia (who are second)

Guia have only two games remaining and are unlikely to finish higher than 6th. They will though i am sure be pleased with this season, their first ever as a league team and they are still the only women's 11 a side team in the Algarve.

Advance notice for Wednesday 13th

Portimonense will be at home again, should be a 4pm ko vs Vítoria Guimarães B but do check next Monday. Also that evening, there will be the semi-finals of the Algarve Cup. The idiots who run the Algarve FA have scheduled these games when Benfica and Barcelona are both on TV so there will be more on the pitches than watching, that's if the players even turn up.

Kickoffs at 830pm / 2030hrs

Almancilense v Moncarapachense and
Quarteirense v Lusitano VRSA

Looks like an interesting finish to the season. It would be good to see Portimonense up amongst the elite again.
Farense are on the squeaky seat, they lost to a last minute penalty at the weekend.
Olhanense seem to have abandoned attacking ideas in favour of securing safety. Last nine games have raised only nine goals in toal, for and against. Small wonder the crowds are pitiful.

Nice point made on the efficiency of Algarve FA!

I will be off to Portimonense tomorrow, a pretty important game. I for one am pleased that they play in the afternoon as I can get there and back on the bus, but how many more than the usual seven or eight hundred would they get if they played later?

I was at Dulwich Hamlet on a foul afternoon on Easter Monday watching Tonbridge play. The crowd that day was twice that, on Saturday Hamlet had almost 2,000 in and that is for the seventh tier of English football. And not a policeman in sight, whereas the 288 at Olhão would have needed at least a dozen armed men to keep order there.

The games involving Mafra in the Segunda Liga are the most boring. Their 38 games have seen a grand total of 62 goals scored or 1.63 per game. Olhanese are next up in that stat with 1.84.

Yesterday afternoon in the Segunda Liga

Farense 0 - 0 Penafiel no details available, but that leaves Farense in a precarious situation at the foot of the table, just one point out of the relegation zone and in a group of five teams separated by just two points.

Braga B 0 - 1 Olhanense att 516 a win for Olhanense and they remain in 10th place.

Portimonense 0 - 0 Freamunde att 1105. A hugely disappointing afternoon for the home team and their second largest crowd of the season, but the gods were smiling as none of the other five teams vying for the two promotion spots won either. Portimonense had several golden opportunities to score the vital goal but spurned them all, while at the other end Freamunde hit the crossbar and brought out a brilliant reflex save by 'keeper Ricardo from a point blank header.

I kept notes, here are the numbers in a surprisingly well behaved game considering what was at stake. The referee was one from the FIFA list and considering his average of six yellow cards per game up to now, seeing only one was a surprise.

Free kicks conceded : Portimonense 12 Freamunde 14
Offside : Portimonense nil, Freamunde 2
Shots on target : Portimonense 5, Freamunde 1 (the header that was saved)
Shots blocked : Portimonense 5 Freamunde 5
Shots off target : Portimonense 4 Freamunde 6
Corners : Portimonense 8, Freamunde 4
Yellow cards : just the one for a Freamunde defender towards the end.

Portimonense remain in 5th place, the top of the table after 39 games now reads :

Porto B 70pts
Chaves 69pts
Famalicão 67pts
Freamunde 66pts
Portimonense 65pts
Feirense 64pts

Olhanense 0 - 1 Portimonense a vital win for Portimonense that takes them into third place, albeit perhaps temporarily with everyone else playing today. The only goal of the game was a 26th minute penalty converted by Ricardo Pessoa.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES

Segunda Liga

Olhanense 0 - 1 Portimonense att 701, their second biggest of the season
Varzim 2 - 2 Farense att 1003

Three vital points for Portimonense. The gods have smiled upon them so that result, coupled with dismal failures among the other challengers, has propelled them into third place and just four points behind Chaves in second. The Algarve side has a very good shout now at promotion to the big league.

Farense though have dropped into the relegation zone. Olhanense are comfortable in mid-table.

There is a full programme of Segunda Liga games this coming Wednesday afternoon, with the key game at Portimonense at which I shall be present.

They will host Gil Vicente (10th) with the kickoff at 4pm /1600hrs

Farense will also be at home, ko 5pm / 1700hrs against Porto B the leaders. Olhanense travel to Oriental Lisboa.

Next Sunday, 17th April, will see the grim local derby between Olhanense and Farense, ko 4pm / 1600hrs. Portimonense will be away.

Goals not exactly flowing! Almancil are now four points clear at the top ahead of Louletano, Lusitano VRSA are in 5th and just outside the relegation spots. Five games remain.

Next Sunday (perhaps) at 4pm / 1600hrs (perhaps)  in the Algarve

Louletano    v    Castrense

I say perhaps as the game at Louletano last weekend was changed to the Saturday at four days notice!

Algarve Juniors League (Under 19)

Last games of regular season just played and Imortal U19 will finish third behind Almancil and Louletano.

The U17 league is just starting a second phase split into two groups. A complicated set up but Imortal U17 are top of the lower section in the First Division of that age group.

Women's Football National League second tier group D

Guia 0 - 5 Estoril

Guia remain in 6th place.  They play their final game away next weekend.

Bonus at Portimonense yesterday afternoon. In an attempt to get more people in, admission for non members was just 1 Euro. It worked, they had their biggest crowd for a League game this season of 1976, around 500 more than the last game.

The members side was still pretty sparsely filled though. I can understand an early kickoff when Benfica are on TV but why not 1730hrs instead of 1600, when most people are at work?

They were rewarded with a 3-1 win against Vítoria Guimarães B and once again the gods of football favoured Portimonense as almost everyone around them lost. The top of the table now looks like this, 41 games played, five remaining. FC Porto B cannot be promoted, so the teams finishing second and third will go into the big league next season.

1FC Porto B412371176
2GD Chaves411915772
3Portimonense411914871
4CD Feirense411814968
5SC Freamunde4118131067
6FC Famalicão4118131067

Remaining games for Portimonense, all dates after next week subject to confirmation, alteration etc.

Home Penafiel (13th place) 24th April and the big one perhaps against Chaves on Sunday 8th May if not moved for TV.

Away Atlético Lisboa (15th place) on Sunday 17th April, Oliveirense (bottom club) Saturday 30th April and Varzim (currently 19th) last game on 14th May.

The game yesterday was rather tense and nervy, although two goals on 30 and 39 minutes by centre back Jadson calmed things down a bit. The two goals were identical, a corner taken, Jadson (orange shirt, number 34)  rises on the near post and heads downwards across the goalkeeper into to the bottom far corner.

First

Second

A third goal three minutes into the second half, down the other end so no pic, sparked a revival from the visitors who soon pulled one back, then caused several moments of alarm before the final whistle.

No such joy for Farense, who lost  2-1 at home to Porto B in front of only 557 spectators. The winning goal came at 90+4 minutes and that blow sends them into the relegation zone.

Olhanense continued their policy of being as boring as possible, this time with a 0-0 draw away at Oriental Lisboa. No details available. Olhanense have scored only TWO goals in their last nine matches, five of which have been 0-0 draws. That's the way to get the fans flooding in!
